Appearance
Tall and lithe, his movements are graceful like a cat's and when he's got his eye on something, almost resembles one stalking his prey. His hair is long and black with parts dyed purple and his eyes are a golden colour. He has a warm smile and a slender face. Due to his cat like nature, he has a tendency to lounge and can often find a comfortable spot where others can't. Yuujirou has a thing for trinkets and frequently wears them in his hair, around his wrist or any other place he thinks they look good.
Personality
Yuujirou is a fairly laid back person due to his feline like personality and can often be found lounging in warm places or in the shade of trees (sometimes reading or playing his tonkori). That said, he is dedicated to his training and will train hard to perfect his skills. He's generally charismatic, friendly and warm to people, is a bit of a flirt and generally ignores personal space (or it just doesn't exist to him). He has a quick wit and will often pose questions back to people, instead of answering them himself. This is partly due to his natural curiosity and he likes to read and learning anything he can due to it. He has a bit of a smart ass streak in him, but this is mainly another show of affection. If people in his division or his friends are threatened, he'll fight to defend them until he can no longer stand on his feet.
History
Yuujirou was born in Kyoto during the middle of the Meiji era to an average classed family. They owned a small restaurant and planned for Yuujirou to take over the business when he grew up. Yuujirou however, seeing the changes happening around him, decided to further his studies into medicine and become a doctor, electing to leave the restaurant to his younger brother.
He was studious and excelled at his studies, but was also cunning and perceptive of those around him. He learnt quickly how to field information from people, but give little away himself which also benefited his dealings with patients. While on field training, a temporary injury to his right hand forced him to hone in his ability to perform surgery with his left hand. Finding this advantageous, he continued to use both hands with equal proficiency.
When he graduated Yuujirou was sent to help the earthquake victims shortly after his 24th birthday. Unfortunately, unknown to them at the time the aftershock was yet to strike and when it did, Yuujirou and his medic team were stuck right in the middle of it. Instead of helping the victims, they became victims themselves as the makeshift clinic collapsed around them, burying the team under walls of concrete. He could feel the broken ribs, the punctured lung- there was too much internal bleeding for anything to be done. Yuujirou could hear the cries of his team and the locals, trapped and unable to help them as his life seeped away. Feeling guilty that he couldn't save them left Yuujirou earthbound, unable to move on. He's not sure exactly what happened after that, only that there was an unknown figure and a strange pressure on his forehead before finding himself in the Rukongai. “You've been here too long, it's time to move on.”
Adjusting to being a spirit didn't initially come naturally to him. Being trained in sciences gave him little belief in an afterlife, so suddenly finding there was something after death left him feeling a little out of place. His only comfort was a tonkori he'd come across by chance and taken to playing. He found the music pleasant and soothing. He wandered through the districts without direction for years, never really settling in one spot for any given length of time, trying to work out where he belonged. He'd almost given up hope of finding his place when he came across one of the Academy's recruitment offices. Intrigued, he began to gather information and learn all he could about the Shinigami, traveling to where ever held the next story.
Eventually he joined a merchant by the name of Koryuu who traveled between the districts, paying his fare by helping at the stall and playing music during the day. He didn't ask questions and Koryuu didn't ask them back. It was the way they both liked it and it served their friendship well. Over time, Koryuu became like an older brother to him and Yuujirou began to feel like he had a home after all.
In all the stories he learnt over his travels, there was something familiar about them and his curiosity drove him to apply to the Academy. He asked around for any information he could get and made absolutely sure he wasn't going to fail, studying and practicing anything he thought would be necessary for so long that Koryuu had to force him to sleep, lest he actually fall asleep during the exam. His initial training went fairly smoothly aside from his mouth occasionally getting him into trouble. As he studied hard and learnt more about the Shinigami and their responsibilities, he realised this was what had happened to him when he'd died. His inability to move on had required a soul burial to be performed on him. Yuujirou doubled his resolve to become a Shinigami- he would help those who'd been in the same situation as him. He made a few friends and one half annoyance that insisted stealing his lunch was legit training. His comment about her being a fox demon was only met with a wide grin, and he gained a regular shadow.
The instructors watching him during training noticed the distinctive way he moved, the quick agile movements and the way he instinctively shadowed and hunted his targets. These skills, they surmised, would be perfectly put to use in the 2nd Division and had him train extra hard to perfect them. He prefers to fight with a blade in both hands if he has the choice but is fine with just one.
Once graduated he was assigned to the 2nd Division, and he found the work there suited his style, just as the surrounding forest suited his temperament. He finally feels like he fits in somewhere, and is quite at home there.
Combat
Strengths
Knowledge of Anatomy - His training from when he was alive gives him a unique insight into vital regions to strike opponents.
Ambidexterity/Agility - He can wield weapons in both hands, giving him the advantage to keep fighting if one hand gets injured. His agility gives him a good acrobatic defense, letting him outmaneuver or avoid many attacks.
Weaknesses
Susceptibility to extreme temperatures - He hates extreme heat or extreme cold. It makes him lethargic and he will complain about it.
Strength - Due to his high agility and acrobatic based attack/defense, Yuujirou, while still strong in his own regard, isn't well suited against heavy hitters. He's quick enough to avoid their blows but has to work twice as hard to bring them down.
