Appearance
A striking man, Matsunaga stands at 6'2" tall, with medium length black hair that he keeps tied up in a topknot. His features are sharp and his eyes are a deep amber that looks almost yellow in some lighting, and have a piercing quality to them. he has a goatee style beard and a sharp mustache. For apparel he normally wears his traditional samurai armor over his normal robes, except for his black Kosode, which he drapes over his shoulders. He does not wear the traditional samurai helmet instead he has a white Hannya mask that he keeps tied to his head but pulled to the right side so that it sits over the side of his head (covering his ear).
Personality
Matsunaga is a very serene person. He is hard to anger and always calm no matter how dire the situation gets. He is very protective of other people. Even if he has little reason to do so, he will stand up and defend someone in need. Matsunaga was a samurai in life, and that mentality has never completely left him. He is disciplined and reserved, always thinking about a situation before heading in headlong. He is also very loyal and obedient, unless his orders conflict with his moral judgment. he regularly practices Iaijutsu as a form of meditation, to clear his thoughts and bring order to his mind. Only when pressed to extremes does Matsunaga`s inner turmoil come through. with just the right combination of taunting, and feeling of inadequacy, his full anger shows through and he looses his ability to think things through rationally.
History
Matsunaga Akiyama was born Matsunaga Isamu in the during the warring states era of Japan, to a noble family of the Tamba province. There he was raised in traditional military fashion. Unlike most of the people in his position, Matsunaga cared greatly for the people of Tamba provnce, and did whatever was in his power to make sure they were treated well by the elite without overstepping his bounds. When he became a Samurai he chose his adult name as Yori, meaning trust as it was the most important to him. He fought under the banner of Akechi Mitsuhide, one of Oda Nobunaga's generals. Akechi Mitsuhide had been granted the province as a gift from Nobunaga when Matsunaga was very young. Akechi Mitsuhide had spotted the gift that Matsunaga had with bladed weapons and kept him close as a personal body guard. After Nobunaga's murder of Mitsuhide's mother, Mitsuhide forced Nobunaga to commit ritual suicide for his betrayel of Mitsuhide's trust. The ensuing calamity of revenge and war that came down upon Akechi Mitsuhide thrust Matsunaga into constant battle and steeled his fighting skill. However, Matsunaga could not be the equal of every fighter that threatened his lords life, and he fell at the hands of Toyotomi Hideyoshi at the battle of Yamazaki while defending his general. He was 28 at the time of his death.
Matsunaga, haunted by his failure to protect his lord, became a grief wracked spirit chained to the battlefield where his lord had fallen. He roamed the battle grounds in search of his lords body but was never able to find it. One day, he was visited by a Shinigami, who offered him relief and a new beginning. Matsunaga gratefully accepted and was purified by the shinigami and sent to live in Rukongai. When he awoke for the first time in Rukongai, he found himself in a bustling slum of poor and hungry. He had appeared in what he would come to know as District 73 of Rukongai. There he spent the majority of his first decade just barely surviving. In his eleventh year of his renewed existence Matsunaga had finally begun to forget about his previous life, every day his memory slipped away a little bit more. Until one day he was finally free of his grief. He found himself a purpose in Rukongai, protecting the helpless of District 73. He saved up his funds and traded for a brilliantly made tachi, and he took it upon himself to protect those around him. Soon he had established a small house where he took in orphans and the unwanted and helped provide for them, and he kept the gangs and thugs away from anyone he noticed them bothering. Of course, one man can only stop organized crime through the threat of violence for a limited amount of time before something gives. One night while he slept, an organized gang that had had enough of his protection of the helpless set his hut on fire, and attacked anyone who tried to escape. Matsunaga had to fight his way out but was in no condition afterward to save anyone that was inside. The next morning, battered and bleeding, Matsunaga made his way to the nearest Shinigami recruitment facility and signed up. He would never fail to protect anyone ever again.
Matsunaga was a student of no consequence at the shinigami academy. His skill with a blade was well recognized, but so was his failure with kidō. When he graduated he was assigned to 7th Division, which suited his personality greatly. Upon graduation, Matsunaga took to wearing his samurai armor at almost all times, so he would never be unprepared. He also began to wear a Hanyaa Oni mask, which he places over his face during combat. To him this is a representation of the rage he keeps buried inside, which he views as his own personal demon. Any who face him must face his demons too.
All of these experiences have combined to make a man who likes to believe he is at peace with the world, calm and collected on the outside, but beneath the surface is a churning storm of emotion that he keeps locked down through meditation. He can not stand to fail at a task he is given, and often apologizes profusely for things that are out of his control. His would gladly give his own life to save another, viewing it as the highest honor he can obtain.
Combat
Strengths
Matsunaga's best trait is his physical strength. It is far beyond what most of his peers have attained, due to his use of an overly large ōdachi, and is often described as "immense".
His physical endurance is also very well honed, he can last take a hit that would fell most opponents and fight past the pain (though this doesn't stop a terminal wound from killing him, just allows him to fight to his last breath).
Finally his calm mind allows him to asses situations well, and read his enemies movements to a exceptional degree.
Weaknesses
Matsunaga's weakest point is his reiatsu control. He in incapable of using Kidō of any kind. He is also incapable of suppressing his reiatsu signature.
His speed is also below average, being trained in the use of the ōdachi has left him used to covering ground with the simple length of his blade. He will loose a race against nearly everyone.
His final weakness in his reliance on his blade. Without some kind of bladed weapon (favoring larger then moving down the list in order of length i.e.: ōdachi->tachi->nihontō->wakizashi->tanto) he is near useless in combat. He has only enough knowledge of hakuda to have graduated the academy, with a near failing grade. He finds unarmed combat distasteful and refuses to learn. (I will not purchase hakuda upgrades)
