Appearance
Being tall for an average Japanese man, Yasuo stands about six feet tall with straight black hair that when let down would just touch his shoulders. Instead, he wears his hair in a neat ponytail, keeping it from getting in his way. His black eyebrows are well trimmed and kept thin, the only hair visible on his slender face. His skin is a pale color, and shows no signs of aging due to his untimely death as a young man. Yasuo has no visible scars on his face, though there is an odd tattoo, about two inches in diameter on his left cheek, in the shape of the kanji for rain. His arms, much like the rest of his body, are slender and lengthy. They too bare no scars, nor do they bare any tattoos like the one on his face. One thing that is different however, is the lack of the top half of his index finger on the left hand. The hand seems otherwise in tact, though the finger is missing from the knuckle, and healed over indicating it happened a long time ago. Although Yasuo is tall, he does not have long toes. In fact, Yasuo's toes are quite stubby if seen without any form of garment to cover them.
If someone were to come close to Yasuo, they would notice that his eyes have an unusual shape to them. His pupils have an oval shape to them, but this is such a slight variance that casually most people couldn't notice it. This however does bring an interesting flaw. Yasuo has trouble seeing things that are in his direct line of sight. Rather, Yasuo's peripheral vision is so much stronger, that he can spot things far faster if they are not in front of him. While Yasuo can see things in front of himself, it is easier for him to see off to the sides. Another small variance someone might notice up close, is a small birthmark hidden among his tattoo. The mark is a slight coloration of the skin, a dark patch in a slightly circular shape. Ths patch is well hidden on his left cheek among the tattoo, and it is not easy to notice from a distance. The marking is small, no larger than an inch in size, though it sits perfectly among the center of the tattoo, keeping it disguised nicely.
For a uniform, Yasuo wears a solid black gi, with the symbol for his division posted on the inside. The borders of his gi are a bleach white color, seeming to outline his frame, and the tips of his longer than normal sleeves. The sleeves are only a bit longer than the average gi, but when his hands are at his sides, the fabric still covers his hands. Only when his arms are bent do his hands become visible. Yasuo's hakama is also black with white trim at the base of each foot, and held on with a white obi. Unlike most, Yasuo wears his Obi slightly to the left, not leaving it centered, though this is for no visible reason. On his left hip, he wears a black sheath, which unlike most shinigami, bares a white trim around the top, much like his uniform. The handle of the blade that rests in the sheath is black, with wrappings forming a tight cross pattern for an ergonomic grip. One might notice the unusual hand guard is triangular rather than a standard square or circle style, and each point bares a small red thread no longer than an inch with black beads hanging from each one. On his feet, Yasuo dons white tobi socks for warmth, and brown bamboo waraji for protection. Upon further inspection, when the chance arrives, each one of Yasuo's hands seems to wear a glove of some sort, though it appears to be fingerless and made of black cloth with red circles around each knuckle.
If asked to go to the human world in gigai, Yasuo tends to be a bit lack luster with his outfit. He tends to use clothing that is for the most part, as generic as possible. This is because he does not want to stand out, but at the same time, Yasuo does have a sense of fashion, but despises the thought of something so trivial. Instead, Yasuo wears simple pants, blue jeans to be specific. For a shirt, he wears something basic, usually a dark solid color, or something with no special marking or brand logo. The most trendy piece of clothing he would wear has to be a shirt with an interesting floral design, but even that would be unlikely to see him wearing. Yasuo is not a fan of shoes, he hasn't been since he began wearing the waraji that most shinigami wear. Instead, when in gigai form, Yasuo tends to lean towards wearing sandals or thongs. This may not be as protective and maneuverable as waraji, but they are more comfortable to him, and that is the sole reason he wears them. An odd addition to his gigai though is a false index finger. While it has very limited use, it does make it easier for him to blend in with society without being stared at.
When off duty, Yasuo often wears formal clothing, though it's still different from his uniform. Yasuo enjoys the feeling of hakama, as it is a warm loose garment. For this reason, Yasuo kept the blue hakama he used during training at the academy. For a gi, he wears a white gi, though the undergarment is the same white one he wears with his uniform. With this outfit, it is clear he is off duty, but the uniform otherwise looks like a modified students outfit, and from the back it would be easy to mistake him as a student if at a distance. Yasuo does keep his tobi socks, white obi, and waraji in this outfit, the combination very comfortable for him. One thing to note though on his casual wear, the sleeves are also long like his uniform, covering his hands when his arms are straight.
Personality
From a casual aspect, Yasuo may seem to be a bit out of touch with certain things. Having no visible sense of humor, and no sense of anger makes him hard to understand at times. Although Yasuo does seem to be relatively happy, he seems to have trouble displaying that as well. He does have the ability to discuss things openly with people, but he seems to be a bit emotionally deprived at times. He is the bakers chocolate of personalities, appearing to be calm, but rarely relaxed. Talking with him is difficult at times, because something about his attitude is always tense, giving people a tensed feeling when they try to be casual. Though this has an opposite effect when he is in the middle of a stressful situation, bringing an odd calmness to those around him. This is due largely to his worst habit, bottling emotions. He has always had this issue, throughout most of his life and time in Rukongai. He seems to constantly be absorbing his own emotions, though this has a negative effect as well. Some emotional situations are sharper than others, and with the right pin prick, Yasuo is liable to grow unimaginably angry, letting his bottled up feelings explode in to a fit of rage. Talking to him in this state is near impossible unless you plan to assert authority, any without authority over him however will find him to on edge. Fortunately, this has never been a common occurrence with him, a fleeting one seen by only select few.
Around authority, Yasuo reserves himself even more so than before. He lets them make commands, and backs off of any perch he's on to make room. He's good with people above him in the chain of command giving him orders, knowing that there is a system for a reason. Yasuo accepts responsibility for his actions and tends to keep himself on a short leash with misbehavior, avoiding it at all costs. With that as a personal goal, Yasuo often earns and shows a great deal of respect to any equal or superior. Most find him quite formal, even when it's not necessary. The issue with this though, is it makes getting to him as a friend become difficult. It always seems like he addresses people distantly, like a stranger might, regardless of how long they have known each other. It's a leash that Yasuo keeps to short, much like his emotions. This however, does not bottle up inside of him, instead it helps to relieve the stress of bottled emotions. It lets his mind think more freely when he lets himself see that there are people who outrank him, or meet his rank. Yasuo is always more comfortable alone, but finds no discomfort from being among the people he addresses so highly.
People that are outranked by Yasuo will find that although he has a strict side to him, it is always balanced by a fair reason. Yasuo is the type of person who would never give a command that he has not or would not do. This is however not good for slackers under him, as he is a very hard worker when he has work to do. Those who avoid following his commands will find that he is a frightening person to cross, and will not back down or let up, as it is a sign of weakness. Although he never seems to smile or frown, he does tell people if they do a good or poor job in their task. Yasuo realizes that this is the only way for people to know if they've succeeded or not. Although Yasuo has trouble expression himself visible, verbally he is adept at explaining his opinion, should the situation warrant it. Yasuo is not the type to insult his subordinates. Rather if he finds people can not complete a goal, he is humble enough to assist, even if it could be seen as a humbling activity. Yasuo never thinks of himself as to good to assist people with a task that he gives, and would only stand by and watch if it is a test, or he knows it can be accomplished without him.
The few people who find themselves close enough to Yasuo that he comes around to referring to them as friends, find that he is very loyal. He does not abandon friends, and is willing to help them however he can. This is largely due to his desire for friends, but his unwillingness to make them. Yasuo is good to his companions, doing what he thinks is best with them. He may not seem like a friendly person at first glance, but if someone were to get close enough, they would find him an insightful and interesting person to work with. These same few people who he calls friend, are the rare bunch who might see the rare smile. This is proof that Yasuo does have emotions, but they are usually tucked away deeply, allowing his mind to think more clearly. Friends of Yasuo are often people who he has spent much time with, and it does not seem to matter about their rank. The only time Yasuo would have a friend and still refer to them in a distant manner would be with a superior. He does not lose his respect by becoming friends, but rather he is more open with the superiors who he finds himself in a friendship with.
Regarding the laws of the Seireitei, Yasuo is a very diligent man. He honors the rules as life goals, working to uphold them. In a situation where a upholding a rule would hurt his friend, Yasuo is torn inside and makes his decision with much regret. He upholds the laws as they are written, only able to apologize for doing so. It would not be unusual to hear him apologize to a companion for turning them in, but it would be unusual to hear that same person be let free. Any who become friends with Yasuo are sure to realize he will not give them special treatment with how the rules are upheld. On the same note, those who do not see Yasuo as a friend, will find he regards them no differently than before he puts the law in effect. Yasuo does not look down upon people who break rules, but rather he seems disappointed in them. It seems he expects much from people, even after they prove they won't obey the rules. If Yasuo is in a position where he is able to demote someone, doing so is not easy or common for him. In fact, Yasuo would rather teach than to punish, offering his guidance over punishment.
Yasuo has two different personalities when fighting, depending on what caused the fight in most situations. On most occasions, Yasuo keeps himself reserved as normal, tending to use sheer wit to overrun his opponent. Yasuo is very athletic and agile, allowing him to fight without using to much energy. He tends to be very fluid, striking only when an opening arises, rather than swinging at every chance he gets. Yasuo prefers fights to be a bit elegant, something that seems a bit out of his style, though it seems to be preferred regardless. Yasuo is very strong with close encounters, but his specialty is at a medium range. Even with a standard sealed sword, Yasuo has the maneuverability to move in and out of striking range quickly, allowing him to get a strong strike, then conserve energy by moving away to avoid needing to block every blow his opponent throws. If however his opponent is to aggressive for this strategy, Yasuo prefers to get abnormally close, so much so that it put an awkward position on his opponent, making attacks difficult to land. This gives Yasuo a benefit, as he only draws his sword in times of need. While Yasuo is very skilled with the sword, he is equally so with his hands, and chooses to call upon his sword when the time is right.
Yasuo uses a form of martial arts designed to make the opponents weakness more obvious with time. This means starting at a fair distance, and advancing in for a blow to test defenses, then remaining in a close range to test offense. Once the balance has been seen, the style then changes to use that weakness as an advantage. If someone is weak defensively, the style remains close to that person, allowing for many quick and powerful strike. At the same time, if the enemy is strong defensively but not as much so offensively, it remains at a distance, moving it to strike with powerful blows whenever an opening arises. Should neither choice be best, then Yasuo unsheathes his sword, allowing for the blade to give him more reach in this style. This allows Yasuo to strike close up with one hand, and if the enemy tries to back off, it gives Yasuo a good chance to make a sword strike as well.
There is one other factor in Yasuo's fighting style. Should he be releasing his emotion, he becomes much more fearsome. Although more graceful, he takes more risks and strikes much harder. This is Yasuo at his full strength, though it is a last resort in all cases. Yasuo gives up his graceful tactics to make for more utilitarian strikes, blasting through defenses, rather than waiting for openings to arise. When in this stage of a fight, one might notice Yasuo no longer carries a solemn face, but rather an aggressive look, letting his reiatsu flow more freely than before. This usually is because he has cast of care for appearances, and strikes now only to kill his enemy. In this form, it might also be worthy to note he uses less demon arts, as it's usually to fast of a fight to worry about them at this point.
History
In a small hospital in the city of Nagasaki near the harbor, a baby was born to Ai and Kentaro Kinjo. It was a healthy boy, with the look of his father, and the quiet behaved spirit of his mother. The baby was to be named Yasuo, meaning peaceful one. The baby was one of three, the middle child. Unfortunately for him, he would be between two girls, which made things difficult for him. Yasuo was always the quiet one in the house, between his older sister Akane and younger sister Kei constantly talking or crying, whatever the situation was. It seemed that he blended in at times, being overlooked due to his civility. Yasuo didn't realize it as a baby, being to young to understand, but as he grew older he began to realize his subtle neglect. Although his parents loved him, Yasuo would not feel that love the way he wanted to.
As a child, Yasuo decided to learn Dutch, and work with the traders across the harbor at Dejima Island as an adult. He took well to the language, though he had some trouble at first. He was fortunate to find a Dutchman who spoke English, and was willing to teach for free. It was an old man named Roosevelt Bushnell who found it fun to have some company. For Yasuo it was unusual to meet someone from another country, as it was forbidden for most foreigners to travel, and even the Dutch were restricted to Dejima. It wasn't more than a year before Yasuo was able to meet with Roosevelt and speak purely in Dutch, a skill only a few Japanese had. This was quite an accomplishment, and it made Yasuo's parents take notice of him more. They began to question why Yasuo desired to learn the language, and he explained his plans.
While growing in to an adult, Yasuo took a part time job at the harbor. He had accomplished his goal of trading with the Dutch, able now to speak more and more fluently their language. In school, Yasuo was often quiet, only speaking when spoken to. He found himself with only one friend, a boy by the name of Kanaye. The two of them were both very quiet, and that was likely the reason they got along so well. They remained friends throughout all of school, and even graduated together. Sadly though, they parted ways then what Kanaye's family decided to move. Yasuo was saddened by this, but decided it was for the best now that he was able to devote more time to work. He took on his job as a full time employee, and used the extra money he earned to purchase a small house near the harbor. With this closer home, he would be able to walk to work much faster than before, and he could see the water from one window in his house.
Yasuo was not always misfortune in life, but the last act of misfortune was what took his life from him. Yasuo had become comfortable at the harbor, to comfortable for safety. While walking, he lost his footing and fell to the water. Unable to swim, Yasuo drowned in the water below. He died alone, no one could have even heard his screams. Twenty years old, and the only thing left was a memory. Yasuo woke to find himself in the Rukongai, a dream in his mind, but the sense of wind blowing gently on his cheek made him realize it was not a cruel dream. The world around him seemed so nostalgic, it was like a feudal land. Everyone in the district he awoke in was slightly wealthy, and Yasuo soon found a generous family to move in with. He became the older brother of one younger sister, who ironically shared the name of his mother, Ai. His new parents, Ayame and Haru. Yasuo found that this wealthy family was not the stereotypical wealthy family, in that they were very tight knit. In this new family, Yasuo found all the attention he wanted.
With time, Yasuo found that he was able to feel the presence of others around him, and he seemed to be much more spry than some of the other inhabitants of the Rukongai. He could not explain it, but even though some said there was no longer hunger for food, Yasuo constantly felt like he was hungry. The hunger grew more and more, and he thought it might be an illness. Yasuo's father came to him, smiling and offering him a plate of food and only this, "It seems I'll have lost another child to the Seireitei, train hard, and never look back." Yasuo realized the meaning of this, he was spiritually stronger than most of the others in the Rukongai, and with that he sought to join the ranks of the shinigami. Yasuo walked to the Seireitei, and humbly asked to be trained in the ways of the shinigami. This was a bold request, but coming from a rich district they did not argue it to much with him. Yasuo was not a noble, but he was well behaved and that was enough to give him a chance.
Training in the academy, Yasuo found that he was quite skilled with the sword, and capable of keeping up with almost everyone in the class. Even more so, he found in his free time that he was equally skilled with his bare hands. Yasuo found he could move more and more freely each day, the effects of training properly were taking effect. Yasuo grew ever more interested in the shinigami lifestyle as he learned of it. Hearing the past, the present, everything brought him closer to his decision for division. Yasuo then learned the rules of the Seireitei, he found them to be inspiring. With nothing left to do, he sought out to take the exam for a division, and he would then be introduced into the ranks. Yasuo wouldn't do what he could, he would do more and grow stronger. He trained constantly, practicing and pushing himself the drive of a warrior deep inside of him. This was Yasuo's new goal, never look back, only forward.
Combat
Strengths
Strong minded, physical strength
Weaknesses
When raging, Yasuo no longer takes care to avoid being hurt, and instead strikes wildly, making him an easier target to hit. As a law keeper, Kinjo finds it difficult to fight at times. He must consider why the person is breaking a law before fighting them, unless he is attacked first.
