Appearance

Is an average-sized man at 6 feet even (his hair plays a part sometimes) and around 195 lbs. The most immediately striking feature about him is is blond hair, which is just around shoulder-length. Unfortunately, it is extremely messy, so much so to the point that legend has it that his locks can break any comb entangled in them. He is an occasional smoker by habit, usually only engaging once a week, on a stressful month. His 'outsider' style sees him usually wearing a set of light-tinted aviator sunglasses on the sunny days.

He can be a bit flamboyant with his clothing choices, which is why most women (and men) shy away from him. His outfit of choice consists of a black undershirt, a tanned button-up (almost never properly buttoned), and a red blazer atop even that. A thin scarf (single-layer cotton, which defeats the purpose of it being a SCARF) is used to add that little touch of 'pizazz' to his look. Torn jeans and any pair of sneakers he can find around the house will usually complete this bizarre clothing combination.

Personality

A man who's age fights to keep up with him, Valen comes off as an energetic and influential guy, despite his health issues. Because he's been literally around the world, he's seen quite a bit, and experience (coupled with a particular lifestyle) has shaped him into an outgoing male who doesn't let opportunities pass him... Good or bad. His mannerisms are lacking, despite being well-aware of how others act, and how he's supposed to; Valen likes to do things his own way whenever he can, in what little ways he can. He rarely ever does the same thing twice, as he believes in trying anything, and that means ANYTHING, at least once. It's how he got into smoking, after all.

History

Valen comes from a long line of... how would you say... 'adventurers'. The maxwell family bloodline has always had a need to explore, to go out into the world, meet new people, see new things, and try their hand at fame and fortune, no matter the cost. Because of which, a great majority of them were honorable thieves and scavengers; Some pirates, and others members of famous historical expeditions, such as Marco Polo's journey around the world.

Modern-day 'adventurers', Luther and Vincent Maxwell (Valen's grandfather and father, respectively) were no exceptions to this rule. However, with every new age and generation, the world became 'smaller'. The blank pages of the map continued to fill out, and the great expeditions and journeys became routine and mapped. Men of adventure slowly began to die out, with only a few places left in the world to explore, almost all of which were quite easily enough to kill the average man. But that didn't stop them. No, Luther, who was a seasoned architect, married and bore a son who's mindset was so like his own that once he reached a level of manhood, he would also join his father in traveling around the world.

Luther and his son Vincent were blood-connected, and shared a deeper level of trust and bonding than most sons and fathers did. When they would go out trekking through forests, they knew that they had only each other to rely on. It came down to just that during one 'outing' gone wrong in Southern Africa, during which Luther, who had been suffering from an unknown disease, sacrificed his own life in order to ensure that his son, and the other members of their expedition, would safely make their way back home. It's unknown whether or not he actually died saving them, but whatever the case, Vincent swore off of 'treasure hunting' and 'fame' after the event.

He would settle down and, much like his father, marry a nice young woman. They lived together for a time in New York, and would eventually have a two children, one boy, and one girl. They named the girl 'Valerie', and the boy 'Valen'. Both were intrepid young children at childhood, and shared similar traits to their father and late grandfather. They were both Maxwells by name and heart, and they're youthful exuberance was the very thing that rekindled the flame of adventure in Vincent's heart, and convinced him to once more travel the world.

The issue was the children, however, and his wife. She (the wife) didn't want to move from Staten Island, where they'd met and lived for so long, nor did she want the kids to go. Eventually, however, they settled on an agreement, in that Vincent would travel the world with his son, while Valerie would stay with her mother, and the family would always meet back together at least once every six months. It seemed perfect, if only for a while.

Years passed, and despite staying true to his agreement, problems arose for Vincent's family. The long-distance relationship grew ever so strained with every year, and as both Vincent and Valen aged, their wishes began to differ. Valen, despite not being much of a treasure hunter like his father, still wanted to explore the world, and meet new people; His father, however, grew tired of the world, and wished nothing more than to be reunited permanently with his wife. To make matters worse, as they traveled, Vincent also began to succumb to the unknown disease his father had been suffering from.

Eventually, they settled their disagreement peacefully, and attained closure in the fact that Valen, under the inheritance of his family's fortune, would still be allowed to travel the world, while his father retired from it all. Of course, the young man kept in touch with his family from the day his father returned home, and still does.

However, Valen would soon find that, as his father has told him, and his father's father told his father, the world was simply not an explorer's world anymore. Maps charted almost every corner of the globe, and the greatest of discoveries seemed to have already been made. What was their left to do? Valen still ponders this, as his travels have led him from a small city in Russia, all the way to Japan, on a mere myth that even Valen wasn't sure whether to believe in.

Strengths

Multilingual - Valen has been to every country in the world, and has learned the basics of Japanese, Mandarin, and spanish because of it. His tongue often slips to english, though.

Ingenuity - He's nowhere near the theif his forefathers were, but Valen has picked up a few tricks from his old man that usually... don't come into play, but are nice to know regardless, such as lock-picking, and the pressure points of a man's body.

Weaknesses

Illness - Valen, like his father and his father's father, suffers from a rare disease that most members of his family have had genetically passed on from generation to generation. The disease attacks the respiratory system, mainly causing holes and deterioration in the lung sacs. The disease had been, from the start, one of the reasons that Vincent retired early, knowing how dangerous it could be living a free lifestyle with such an illness. Though it's not progressed very far at all, Valen occasionally suffers from a loss of breath and coughing issues. His smoking habit doesn't really help this issue.
