Appearance
Kamui is a slender young man with long brown hair that comes down past his ears and down most of his neck. He rarely combs his hair, letting it just fall as it will. Kamui is not one who particularly cares about how he looks but he despises having it commented on. He has several serious scars in his midsection as a result of several battles. Kamui has a pair of unusually yellow colored eyes.
Personality
Kamui is generally a closed off person, rarely ever showing emotion towards anyone. He never gelled with anyone at the academy, always being treated as an outcast and always looking at shinigami with disdain. He prefers working alone, feeling that he can only be held back by having to fight with other people. He only tends to grant respect to people stronger than him. He rarely uses friendly responses to people, preferring formality to distance himself from the rest of the Shinigami.
Kamui has been suffering recently from his desires to protect innocent people, including Hana, and his desire to seek vengeance for his previous defeat. He also seems to be affected by dreams he has been having. He has been closing himself off more than usual, meditating and trying to sort his feelings out.
History
Kamui enjoyed his lazy days since he died, forgetting painful memories that long since passed him by. He lived and worked and often played, but on one unfortunate night his afterlife became dismayed.
Kamui was content living a peaceful life working at a bakery and rose shop with a young (appearance twenties) woman named Hana and her grandmother in a nicer part of the Rukon district. Most patrons were shocked to learn that it was in fact Kamui who grew the roses in the shop.
Kamui was actually using a form of using his reiastu to grow rare species of roses, although he is completely unaware of this fact. It was this subconscious talent that got him originally noticed that he might have potential as a Shinigami, however, Kamui had no desire to join, looking down on the group. People close to him also found it unusual that Kamui NEVER spoke about his life. Whenever he was asked, he would merely make a comment how it didn’t matter or that he could not remember. Hana's grandmother told visitors and Hana not to make an issue of it, since Kamui clearly did not want to remember his past.
The fact is that Kamui has blocked off his memories of his life, not wanting to carry of burden of his battles in life in the here and now. Kamui had shown up at the bakery door one day covered in blood looking half dead. Hana and her grandmother cared for Kamui for weeks as he shouted out what they believed to be the names of former friends. Hana's grandmother took his unusual clothing and a sword that Kamui had on his back when she found him and sealed them in a box in the attic (she was horrified by the aura radiating from the child and the sword even while comatose). When he finally awoke Hana was shocked that Kamui only remembered his name, although over time he would remember a few things.
Kamui’s life changed on one fateful day on one fateful walk. Kamui walked up as two Shinigami were destroying a shop for having the audacity for asking for them to pay for their meals. Kamui was able to defeat the two, using one of their zanpakutōs against them. Kamui reminded the two that they were supposed to defend justice and that they were scum. As he was leaving Kamui was confronted by a third Shinigami, a high ranked officer. It appeared the two shinigami were new and exceptionally weak, which should have been obvious since Kamui was able to overpower them.
The officer challenged Kamui to combat. Kamui grabbed the other zanpakutō and charged the officer, only to be defeated in one swing.
That moment as Kamui stated was forever ingrained in his mind. The officer stood over Kamui, holding his zanpakutō. Lying on the ground, Kamui could feel the blood gushing out of his gut, he could feel his shoulder ripped through hanging by a single thread. He was barely able to get his words out, “Finish it.” The officer raised his sword, “My sword has no desire to kill you. You have talent. You could easily become a great Shinigami. However, I cannot allow anyone to kill members of my squad, even if they have acted out of line. Justice is dealt by the Gotei 13 and not by you.” As the officer began to leave, his two subordinates in his hands, Kamui was able to sit up, “I will, I will defeat you, so if you don’t kill me now, I will come after you.” The officer smirked and left.
Over time Kamui began extensive training in swordsmanship and physical training to maybe one day meet this Shinigami who defeated him. Kamui still had no desire to join the Shinigami but felt that he needed to be stronger, for his pride and other reasons he couldn’t understand. Hana noticed that the training was brutal and that Kamui wouldn’t stop, even suffering constant injuries. Kamui promised her that both of them would be ok and that he would not let anything happen to her. At times it felt as if Kamui had always been able to fight at this level but had no recollection why or how. Hana and her grandmother were upset that Kamui was walking down this path again, since it must of brought Kamui so much pain in the past.
One day however, Hana became very ill. The doctors said she had a rare condition that they did not have the means for which to cure. Kamui began to search all over the Rukongai for a doctor who could cure Hana, with no luck. During his journeys Kamui began to challenge and duel powerful swordmasters in an attempt to become stronger. After several years of wandering Kamui finally accepted that the only the Shinigami have the means to cure her, and joined, hoping to steal a cure and escape as soon as he was strong enough.
At the academy Kamui showed a natural talent for swordsmanship. However, Kamui was quite well known for shattering his zanpakutō. It took Kamui months to remember the sword he had when he came to the other world. Feeling that this was the only blade that he could ever truly call his own, Kamui returned for the first time in years to the place he had called home. Kamui left as soon as he reclaimed his sword, leaving medicine for Hana that he managed to steal while being treated for an injury. He had actually faked symptoms of Hana's disease to get the cure. He said that the Kamui that had lived here was dead, and that Hana and her grandmother should forget that he ever existed.
As a reward for find him, Kamui was given his zanpakutō’s name, Fuma. However, Fuma warned Kamui that he would not grant Kamui any additional power with just his name, and that Kamui would need to unlock the “hidden meanings of his own name” to have any additional power. Fuma harassed Kamui about the first time he held him, about the first time he killed, about what was in Kamui's heart of hearts. Fuma warned Kamui that he himself wanted his power sealed away.
Even without Fuma breaking the seal, Kamui was able to showcase his form and skill against opponents in live weapons that did not constantly break. Kamui, in his arrogance, was able to bode his instructor into dueling him with live weapons.
While outmatched Kamui was able to win the match by allowing himself to be stabbed in his left shoulder. Running himself up his opponent’s sword Kamui was to position himself for the killing strike. Kamui told his instructor to surrender or he would slit his throat. Before he could claim that victory Kamui passed out. Kamui's instructor had bought himself enough time to let the injury catch up with Kamui.
At the court martial Kamui threw himself under the bus to save his instructor (who as a teacher was going to take most of the punishment) saying he alone should be held responsible. The academy punished both severely but allowed both to stay in their respective posts. Fuma told Kamui that was foolish to save a Shinigami, much less one Kamui despised. Fuma told Kamui that with that attitude, he would never unlock his powers for Kamui to use.
Combat
Strengths
Kamui’s greatest asset is his ability to continue fighting and his desire not to lose. To quench this desire to get stronger he trains constantly, rarely stopping for injury or fatigue. Kamui has started recently wearing weighted clothing as well as trying to find reiastu suppressing equipment to force his body to train at a higher level. This training gives Kamui excellent foot skills and swordmanship skills, as well sharp reflexes and eyes as a result of his training.
Kamui’s innate understanding of plants aids him in finding “quick” or unusual cures for minor aliments and poisons. Kamui is particularly fond of a salve he makes as a quick cure all for most injuries.
Weaknesses
Kamui tends Kamui tends to come and go as the wind does. Whenever he wants to go he goes. Whatever he wants to do he does. Kamui always carries out his orders as given but he tends to vanish in the between time. No one at the academy was sure where he went, but it pushed his status as an outcast.
While strong, Kamui is not very proficient with martial arts. He tends to rely on natural instincts and reflexes to defeat opponents with his fists, but can easily be dispatched by an opponent with practical knowledge.
Kamui's one physical weakness has always seemed to be his left shoulder, the place he was stabbed when dueling a shinigami instructor at the academy. It is easily damaged and forces Kamui into extreme pain. He can generally fight through it but it seems to bother him more than other damaging blows.
Kamui's "Faking" of the early symptoms of Hana's disease to get the cure would obviously get him in significant trouble if he were ever found out.
