Personality

Tategawa Shinji is a person who doesn't talk and move much, most of the time that is, mostly due to laziness on his part. This is not always the case though. The man has always been with books when he was alive and, though he sometimes becomes too lazy to read, he tries his best to learn as much as he can for he was not born socially inclined. This cold indifference is only shown to those he is not comfortable with, to those who are not in on his inner circle. When he was still in Okumichi, only 5 out of countless peoples have seen what he really is and only none in Rukongai. Inside, Shinji is a happy person who likes to joke around and make fools out of, not himself, but those around him. The man is someone who would help people just because he sees they need it but cares not for any thanks, nor does he outwardly like getting praised. He would never accept presents as thanks and favors done for him as gratitude are not welcome either.

A weird guy, many may seem to see but he just don't want anyone else to say things to him that he does not like. He upholds his pride to a certain degree but manages to lower it only in times when someone needs his help. After that, he carries the person to someone who can care for that person and leaves. He doesn't even like giving out his name, even if someone asks him directly.

Another trait of his is that he has a sharp tongue and is always honestly saying his opinions, if it will not interfere with his pride of course. Pride is something that he values above all, though honor doesn't always to be next to it. Honor is treated as something that can be pushed aside and stored in a cabinet or thrown away when it gets too ugly and such.

As for battles, he is one to avoid battles if he can, but if it concerns someone else in trouble, then that's another story. He only backs down from a fight if it will greatly be helping the one he is protecting. He doesn't usually like to talk much and prefers action, but he wouldn't be one to be quiet when his pride is being assaulted.

History

Tategawa Shinji was born in Okumichi City to Tategawa Jikamaru and Yutaka Reika, both employees of a printing company. And as such, they always bring home books for their child, who loves reading them in return. They were only a small tight-knit family. Him, his mother and his father were all that he needed, not caring for luxury, for up until then he was unadulterated by money for he did know of them yet.

Time passed by and his parents were promoted again and again due to their diligence and hardwork. Soon enough, money started pouring in and thus started his drive for more of it. He wanted more money for himself as he wanted to buy more books than he could read. Pride started building itself into an ego that only death could shatter. And indeed, he started becoming overly judgemental of other's grades and their IQ's, discriminating them from his social circle. His friends enjoyed his company for he would answer their assignments for them, and he loved it.

His quest for knowledge grew even deeper, and even up to the point where he had to go to other places to access it. His parents prized him over everything but his pride made them last on his list. He kept them waiting and waiting everyday of their life. Soon enough, he started quarreling with his parents, treating their opinions as inferior to his, stating that knowledge is always right. Everything else is b*******.

Shinji came to a time when everything just wasn't enough. His opinions started affecting the higher ups, making his opinion a prime target of journalists and media. He would go against national ideas if he thought they were wrong, and he would do so in the worst possible way. Insults always fly out of his mouth. His parents told him time and again to just be honest and stop insults but he would not listen. They were afraid he would get in trouble. But he would just not listen.

They went out one fine Sunday afternoon. July 15, they returned home from their whole day trip to the congress to sleep. They never woke up. A bomb has blown their house to bits, killing all of them.

Shinji awoke, stood up, not feeling anything. He looked around, there were rubble all around. His parent's body were no where to be found. A memory went to his head and thought he was dead. And he was. He looked for his body but he can't find it. 'Must have been blown to bits' he thought, just shrugging his shoulders. His parent's spirits were nowhere to be found. 'Must be haunting some place else.' He thought, but he was wrong. A hollow attacked them and ate their spirits whilst he got punched unconscious trying to defend his parents. This memory never came to him. He didn't know. Then a shinigami came, he never expected anything. He learned never to assume anything when he knew nothing about something.

Life in Rukongai

When he came to Rukongai, he started searching for a place to live. He found an empty shack at the outskirts, there he waited for something to happen. He never really liked being a ghost, not minding them even when he was still alive. But he was not. He was thinking of things in the after life. He was bored. Everyday he walked down the road, looking the place over. Time passed on and he got used to living in Rukongai. His everyday wanderings bringing to him new understanding on what the after life is, though he never catches on with the mainstream events of this place, if there was such. The days here were peaceful at the outskirts. It was something he missed when he was acquiring all his knowledge. That quiet tranquility that seeps in when he was alone and just thinking of things he wished he could know.

Years went by and he got used to living in his shack. People who passed by this part of Rukongai are either very poor, very desperate or on some mission. The surroundings there sustained him enough. He found exploring the outdoors of his house quite exhilarating. At first he found himself tired easily. But it was too beautiful and quiet that he did not mind it too much. He had learned to live on his own. A life of loneliness where nothing new happens. He thought he could survive that way. But he was wrong.

It was a pleasant sunny and Shinji decided to have a walk. He had taken walks before and they proved excellent remedies for boredom. Such things come at him at different times of the day. Usually he either practices Shadow fencing with the sticks that lie around when he is not doing anything, tries his luck with a vegetable garden, or, the thing that makes his mind tick most of the time, making things out of litter. It would seem odd for him since he was not used to doing this when he was alive but he enjoyed the hobby. Eventually, word spread about his collecting of junk until such time people came to him to give him their junk. Though sometimes they hire him to fix things for them. He had become a quite adept mechanic, if one may call him that.

One day, an old lady came by to give him pieces of broken electric fans, with her are her, Shinji assumed, grandchildren. She asked him if he could make her a new one just like those pieces she gave him. Shinji inspected the pieces and found them to be some sort of old model. He scratched his head.

"I am quite sure this is an old model so I will need plenty of time to construct such a pieces of appliance, if you grant me that." He said, trying to be gentle with the old lady.

She smiled and said.

"I am willing to grant you that. However, that piece has a strong sentimental value that I can not part with it. Do let us stay here whilst you fix it?"

Shinji nodded. Company is most welcome to him right now. The children played outside whilst the lady sat inside Shinji's small wooden hut. The day turned to be sunny all day long so the children played outside for a very long time. The old woman talked to him whilst he worked. He never replied, nor looked back but she still continued telling him her story. He was only half listening though. He found out that those kids were not in any way related to her. But she took them in, nevertheless, for she could not stand to see children without quarters and an elder to take care of them.

Night came, and the velvet sky was filled with sparkling dots of lights. The children came inside, as did he. For a while he had forgotten what he waited here for. But the closing of the door made him remember. He went outside and sat on the bench. Footsteps were heard. Wooden sandals clicking on the stony ground and the old lady smiled at him. She nodded. She stood up.

"Excuse me child but this one seems to be qualified as a shinigami. Is it possible for you to look him over and see if he can?" The shinigami looked him over. A nasty look was shot at Shinji.

"You're reiatsu is nowhere near strong. You have such a pathetic spirit force."

Shinji, in all his pride and upbringing, would not swallow his pride and silence himself. A cold tone erupted from his now grinning lips.

"Your insufficient intelligence fails to acknowledge that spiritual force may well be hidden. It seems you lack enough skills to tap into my reserves and truthfully appraise my real level of reiatsu." Shinji's eyes were empty of emotions now.

The shinigami's face turned blood red. But before the male blonde shinigami could speak, Shinji spoke.

"It would not bode well for your lowness to attempt to use force on an unarmed civilian. Although that is what I expect from you. Go on then. Eliminate my spirit. If you can that is."

The shinigami charged at him in full speed, readying his blade. One slash and it was over. 'Am I in another plane of existence?' Shinji thought, opening his eyes. He was in a kind of hospital. The blonde shinigami was there in chains, escorted by the old lady and two other shinigamis. They asked Shinji.

"Your reiatsu is plain strong child. You such a strong yet unviolent reiatsu. Tell me, have you been practicing control over you spiritual pressure."

Shinji shook his head.

" I have never heard of how to do such things."

The shinigami looked stunned. Why? He doesn't know.

"I'll rest myself more. Please get out of my quarter." He said.

And they did, nodding before him, including the lady. The old lady asked.

"Anything the matter captain?"

A hint of concern was evident in the woman's feeble, trembling voice. The captain shook his head. He nodded.

"I must take my leave. The child will be instated in the Shinigami academy."

The old lady nodded in return, smiling. He was happy for the child. She took her leave a few moments later.

The captain was thinking. 'The child's reiatsu prevented the sword of one of his members from slashing his spirit in half. Instead, he only gained a 1.5 inch deep wound. I'll keep watch over this prideful kid.' He thought, dragging the blonde shinigami with him for trial.

Shinji was placed in the academy but never gained any friends. He was too aloof and quiet. The only thing his classmates know about him is his name and that is all. He never spoke unless asked to. Even then 5 words would be unusual for him. He graduated with flying colors, not as much as the others though. He never wanted to be most outstanding. But just enough to be above the rest. He is afraid his earth life might be repeated.

After graduating, he tried for the 12th division. Fortunately, he passed. Now all he had to do was to attain a shikai.
