Appearance

Rikimaru

Rikimaru is a notably tall and lean person with some muscles, not to mention his long dark reddish hair and relatively pale cream-colored skin followed up by his brown eyes (which are usually covered by a pair of reflective black goggles). What he lacks in build he makes up for in skill, evident by looking at his arms since they don't have much muscle to them.

Personality

Rikimaru is known for his variable demeanor and his relatively sharp insight into people and situations, although the former is slightly more common than the latter. He’s commonly seen as the bridge between the quiet and the social, the competitive and the recreational, the brawn and the brains. He is as in tune with his surroundings as he is in tune with himself, both being surprisingly good in equilibrium when compared to your average shinigami.

Known for his one-strike knockout punch style of combat, Rikimaru will wait and time his strike until the opportune moment with a degree of calculation, calm, and wit that most swordsmen would be jealous of. With his technique honed to near perfection over centuries of training, Rikimaru is sometimes known for pulling an unusual victory from the jaws of certain defeat, even against battle-hardened foes that the 11th division are known for, usually leaving the battle in better condition than he entered it. While Rikimaru isn’t known to engage in fighting when possible (on the contrary he’d rather avoid it), he certainly possesses the demeanor to hold his own in combat and would always stand up for those he believes are either oppressed or in danger.

In his downtime Rikimaru is known for drinking large quantities of high-quality Sake (and not coming out drunk, an unusual talent he has been known to show, which is why he always wins drinking games) and reading a various selection of books, scrolls, and tomes. He has a knack for scrawling down bits of information on a little black book (that has infinite pages and a finite thickness made by the 12th division) he carries around with him for his own personal use, just so he can stay on top of it all.

History

Rikimaru has lived in Soul Society for all of his life, living in the 15th district since before he could remember he was a soul. He was a natural self-taught reader, writer, and improvised weapon duelist, the three things that caused his concentration to heighten his inner reiatsu to shinigami-like levels. The village elder took note of this and shipped him off to the Shinigami Academy, knowing he would be dragged there sooner or later. To them it seemed like a rite of passage, but to Rikimaru it felt like a death sentence were it not for the knowledge that lay beyond the gates of the Seireitei.

His time in the shinigami academy was well-spent, excelling in Zanjutsu, Hohō, somewhat in Kidō, then nearly failing in Hakuda. After his six years in the Shinigami Academy, Rikimaru graduated to be enlisted as an aid to the Grand Seireitei Library, the place he got his sharp insight from. He was a natural reader and writer while he spent his time here, reading almost anything he could get his hands on while filing everything in its proper place with utmost speed and efficiency. Rikimaru easily earned his right to progress through the ranks, even gaining the privilege of scribing some of the documents that were to be stored.

With his inclination for technical writing, Rikimaru was often contracted by the 12th division to compile data sheets and related materials for research, often earning a reputation for being reliable yet individual. Consequently, this was also a time when some shinigami students had gone rogue and fled to the human world, leaving Rikimaru to be assigned the task to hunt them down and bring them back alive so they could be given proper punishment. While he managed to round all of them up, he was ambushed by a troupe of hollows, and being the only one with a zanpakutō, he figured he could teach the students a glamorous lesson on what it was to be a shinigami.

It was a brief battle, but it left Rikimaru battered and beaten with a damaged zanpakutō. Even though he recovered the students and returned them to Soul Society, he had hindered his own progress in battle, so he set aside time for training, eventually developing his one-strike fighting style and unlocking his shikai. In light of this he was transferred to the 7th division and progressed through the ranks rather rapidly, even earning the Captain seat once his Bankai was unlocked and there was a vacant position due to the death of the previous captain in a traitor battle royale.

Things couldn’t have gone better for Rikimaru since his promotion, but that all went downhill the day he engaged a troupe of Gillians headed by a none other than a Vasto Lorde. In what was possibly one of the grizzliest battles of his career, Rikimaru managed to escape the ordeal with his head still attached to his neck, but he suffered severe injuries in the process, meriting his year-long stay in the 4th division critical ward. Once his test results came back positive for zanpakutō hollow contamination and the unresponsive nature of the blade, he was immediately demoted to the 3rd seat position since a captain and a lieutenant had to have control over their zanpakutō at the time.

Although he’s in perfect health today, Rikimaru still bears the horrid scars of his past rise to power, now aiming to pursue a less violent path to glory through his own ends...

Combat

Strengths

- Zanjutsu: If there were ever a master of the way of the sword, Rikimaru would be the one to look to; his carefully-honed craft allows for some deadly strikes and a flawless form that most duelists would kill for.
- Holding Liquor: As mentioned in his personality, Rikimaru is a force to be feared when drinking with. He can consume as much alcohol as any town drunk on independence day and walk away without even feeling tipsy.
- Elusive: Being the duelist he is, Rikimaru can be a tough person to hit according to a being using medium to long-range combat, giving him the advantage over polearm and physical/energy projectile users.
- Swift: While not necessarily eye-evading fast, Rikimaru’s combat demeanor will emphasize the speed and efficiency of his sword as well as the fluidity of his combat style.

Weaknesses

- Hakuda: Rikimaru’s tall and slender form allows for some easy openings in close-quarter combat; he possesses no grappling skills other than to kick back an opponent or grab them by the neck, not that he has any grip either.
- Offense/Defense: Rikimaru is neither an offensive nor defensive fighter; he will wait until just the right time to strike an opponent or block an oncoming attack, though he has been known to weave in and out of attacks consistently.
- Resistance: While his mind is developed enough to resist psychic effects, his rather slim and exposed body is rather susceptible to liquid or gas toxins (other than alcohol). Unless he has special protective gear he will be one of the first to feel the toxin’s harmful effects.
