Appearance

Rey is a quadruped Hollow with a small, lanky body the color of a polished skeleton. His mask is elongated with sharp, jagged points protruding from the top. His spine seems to sit upon his armored hide and extend pass his tailbone to become a slender tail with an ebony black tip. His feet are an oddity compared to his entire body; the skeletal husk that covers his paws is the same color as the tip of his tail. A rather large gash cuts through the right eye of his mask and gives him a distinct look compared to other Hollow.

Personality

Rey is a rather old Hollow who has gained both subconscious and intellectual thought. He has become a cunning and deceptive predator who uses his unique intelligence to make hunting much more entertaining. He takes pleasure in others’ pain and likes to exploit the hidden fears and weaknesses that people tend to keep secret from the world and use it against them. He has learned patience over his long life and will track his prey for months or even years if he feels their soul is worth the hunt. Rey sees others species as insignificant and even looks down on other Hollows. He’s very arrogant and proud, but is still cautious and careful around others. Though Rey is known to have a horrible temper, he is very good at controlling his emotions and keeping a calm disposition at all times.

History

Rumors circulated throughout New Spain* concerning the great conquests of North America and the savage barbarian people that lived there. Many an ordinary citizen had sailed to their foreign lands and returned famous Spaniard conquistadors. New Spain* was quickly expanding its influence across the seas and claiming new territory. It was a sanctioned and diplomatic move of sorts to explore North America. The seduction of power and riches that seemed to be guaranteed to anyone that could survive North America, however, lured many devious men to sail the Gulf of Mexico. They cared not for the lives of the honorable Native Americas that resided there; many fell to the ambitions of the ignorant Spaniards that invaded their lands. Villages were razed and children were abducted from their homes to be used as slaves. What had once been a quest for territorial expansion had soon become a personal vendetta to rid the land of its true inhabitants.

Amongst these sinister racists was Bartholomew Vasquez

He came from poverty and lived most of his adolescent years stealing food from the street vendors to survive. It had all been to supply for his family in the beginning, but the rules quickly changed. Bartholomew began to run with other delinquents and performed more dangerous crimes like arson and kidnapping for money. The homeless and starving relatives he had set out to protect and provide for had been replaced by the vandals of the criminal underworld; they had become his family now. His name was quickly known throughout New Spain and was feared and respected by its citizens. Having acquired everything he could from the desolate and backwater city, Bartholomew set his sights higher. He wanted to rule all of New Spain* the way he ruled over Mexico from behind the scenes. Bartholomew enlisted himself under the command of Emperor Carlos V with this dark dream in mind. Using his resources both new and old, Bartholomew requested to sail to North America to help claim territory for his Emperor. He agreed that New Spain* should be expanded and felt that extending their reach across the ocean was a primary objective that he’d have to accomplish before dethroning the Emperor. With Carlos’s approval, Bartholomew traveled across the Gulf with a number of other Spaniards hoping to claim personal glory under the guise of helping their country.

Their greeting was less than friendly. The moment the Spaniards set foot to American soil, Bartholomew gave the order to subdue the natives and kill any who opposed them. He was known to take command over people and order them around, especially since his quick rise through the underworld was due to his ability to establish authority and commandeer any and all people. Despite having no official superior status to any of them, Bartholomew met no hostility in his takeover and watched as the men all formed under his singular banner to follow his every command. His reputation had preceded him and none of these ordinary Spaniards wanted to stand against him. His newly-established troops poured through the forests and began their hostile conquest for the American land before them. Men, women, and even children were slaughtered at Bartholomew’s word; examples to show the Native Americans that they had no fear of killing. They met much force and violence from the Indian people, but this was quickly silenced.

In a matter of months, Bartholomew had captured and claimed over fifteen percent of America in the name of Spain. His armada of Spaniards and Native Americans, both traitors and slaves alike, swelled by the day and his power seemed to unmatched. The angel of death was always hovering close by as many a power-hungry fool made an attempt on his life. None succeeded and Bartholomew’s guard was increased with each failed assassination from his own men. Paranoia began to eat away at his mind as he started to fear his own men. Soon he was slaughtering soldiers just to show them that he didn’t trust any of them. Envy and disrespect swept through his misfit band of men and eventually he was plotted against. In Bartholomew’s latest and final battle for a piece of Native American territory, his men turned on him and killed him from behind. The main orchestrator of the deception took his commanding position and part of his name in order to taunt his predecessor; Francisco Vasquez de Coronado.

It wasn’t long before Bartholomew grasped that he was dead. His vengeful soul refused to leave the Americas, however, and he continued to watch his men’s progress with eyes of scorn. His hatred for Francisco was strong enough to corrode his spirit chain faster than the normal plus’s chain should and in less than a month, Bartholomew’s wicked feelings consumed his soul. He had transformed into a mindless Hollow with one obsession; Francisco’s soul. It didn’t take long for the Hollow to track down the Spaniard and devour the tainted bastard to try and quench its hunger. The taste of soul merely whet the Hollow’s appetite, however, and further pushed its obsession for them.

As time moved on around the creature, it began to materialize a sentient mind once again. No memory of its past life lingered in its newly-awakened mind, but certain aspects of the person it used to be had embedded themselves into its psych. It continued to hunt both living humans and plus souls to satisfy its hunger and applied its steadily-growing experience into the mix. It became a seasoned hunter and learned to use its prey's fear and weaknesses to make them easier to capture. Its knowledge pushed pass the walls of the average human as decades turned into centuries and it began to feel superior to all other creatures. Naming itself Rey from the Spanish term for Emperor or King, the Hollow made its commanding presence known for all.

Rey didn't always have his inflated ego left unchecked, however. There was one instant when he ran into a plus soul in the jungles of South Africa that had given him quite a bit of trouble. Its spiritual strength proved to match that of the black-robed souls known as Shinigami that he had met on occasion. The prey had tried its best to kill Rey and Rey him, but eventually Rey had to withdraw from the dangerous fight and leave the plus soul to its afterlife. This wasn't before the plus had attacked with its sword in a dangerous show of skill and nearly slashed through Rey's skull. Instead, a long scar cuts into his mask from the attack and constantly reminds Rey of that battle-crazed plus that nearly killed him.

He swore to himself that he would personally end the life of that deliciously powerful plus soul if they ever crossed paths again.

  • New Spain was Mexico's original title before it gained independence in 1821
