Appearance

Reathin is a young man apparently in his mid to late twenties, with bronzish skin tone, black hair and light green eyes. He wears his hair a bit long, mostly due to not paying attention to it until it gets to be actively bothersome. While not particularly petite, he is somewhat below average in height. His face has a slight sharpness to it, but his smile is comparatively soft. His limbs and torso are quite thin, with little visible muscle on either. Just below his neck lies an abstract tattoo, the meaning of which is as lost to him as the rest of his mortal memories. The mark is about the size of a small hand with a circular, somewhat jagged design that doesn't seem anything more than decorative. Since he normally wears the upper portion of his shinigami robes loosely, this is usually visible. He wears two personal accessories: a small glass sphere about the size of a marble with a colorless flame burning within, and a pocket watch and chain combination. The former was one of his earlier experiments at twelfth into ultra slow burning materials (the chemical compound works in that regard, with several decades estimated before running out, but releases too little energy to be a realistic fuel for the amount of work to make it, so Reathin keeps it as a memento instead). He wears it on his belt and has a habit of holding it when nervous. The pocket watch is a rather ornate piece made of brass, kept in excellent working order with frequent maintenance. In silent areas, it's possible to make out the quiet ticking if one is looking for it. Reathin wears his zanpacto sheath on his back, over the right shoulder to accommodate his right-handedness.

Personality

Reathin's personality is somewhat quirky, even if he is a pleasant enough person. His insatiable curiosity makes him well suited to learning and he delights in intellectual puzzles of all sorts. That said, this often leads him to seemingly endless probing of an individual for information and he has a habit of not realizing that a particular question might be a sensitive topic. This is not done maliciously, and while he has trouble recognizing the signs that a person might wish to switch topics, he will back down if it is brought to his attention (at least until his curiosity builds up again over time. He can be remarkably forgetful when distracted). He tends to switch between hyperfocus and a scatterbrained attitude with little apparent warning, sometimes able to work to the exclusion of food and sleep while other times barely able to keep his eyes from darting about looking at everything around him as if it were completely new and exciting. The former attitude is easier to bring out in structured environments, so when he is working at 12th Division, he is usually able to stay on task. He likes to make extensive schedules, mapping out his days with high precision, but his tendency to switch out into curiosity frequently sabotages these efforts.

Reathin dislikes combat and avoids unneeded conflict whenever possible. While he has no moral compunction against violence (at least justified violence), he is well aware that his body is not built for it and has no desire to push its already low limitations. When forced into a fight, he is apt to use dodging tactics and quick, precise hits. If he cannot score a clean blow to vulnerable areas, he ops for attrition tactics, wearing an opponent down with weak blows until he can do so. His curiosity applies even in combat however, and he occasionally takes risks when trying to understand something new (such as a specific individual's powers, especially non-unique ones).

History

Not unlike most souls that enter Soul Society through konso, Reathin doesn't retain specific memories from his time while living. The process was only unusual in that it went so far as to remove his name. When he was alive, he was a horologist, working at a medium-sized store repairing watches and other timepieces. Business was not exactly a flurry of growth, but it was steady and surprisingly stable and he enjoyed it the precision work. His death was unexpected and sudden, the unfortunate victim of a massive collision with an oncoming bus on his way home from work. The impact was sufficient to kill him more or less instantly, and while it took about a week, he was eventually found by a shinigami who sent him on his way to Soul Society.

His transition into the afterlife was simultaneously good and bad. On the one hand, he was stranded in a foreign region with no memory of where he had come from or what his name was (his life skills were, of course, intact). It took some time to learn the language Soul Society spoke, but he was fortunate enough to have arrived in the 3rd District of the Rukongai, which was relatively clear of crime and danger. He slowly pieced together both the Japanese language and his circumstances. Once he did so, he eventually decided to settle down and make the most of his circumstances. Attempting to help out around his neighbourhood with repairs (especially small precise things), he managed to get along well enough with those who he figured he would likely be spending eternity with. For the first few years, this worked out well enough. Then, as time went on, he started feeling the old sensation of hunger. Not long after, out of control, mostly subconscious manifestations of his reiatsu flared up and manifest wildly, nearly burning down his home and generally causing a mess of things. The shinigami were informed by word of mouth that a new plus had begun developing powers, and he was swiftly adopted into the Academy to be trained.

At first apprehensive at the thought of joining a large organization with non-too-positive a reputation among Rukongai members, he soon began finding his interest in his new abilities overcoming his worry. While his hand to hand and swordplay were average at best, he intuitively understood kidou and delighted in utilizing such magic. Pushing much of his training towards early mastery of kidou, he found he was able to graduate very high in his class, scoring just under a proper prodigy. He made his way through the academy without any major hitches (although his too-eager experiments with unstable kidou occasionally got him into trouble) and he graduated a full shinigami slightly earlier than normal (although not to the point where it would likely be particularly unique). He was deemed a clear fit for 12th Division and accepted a posting there without the slightest bit of hesitation.

His early days within 12th were a delight. The benefits of a large, well supplied scientific facility did wonders for his imagination, and he spent many a long evening and early morning laboring furiously over some esoteric piece of spiritual engineering, chemistry or the like. It was during these moments, particularly when working with delicate machinery, that he felt some echo of his former life leaking through. While unlikely to regain his memories, as they no longer properly exist at all, he finds certain kinds of devices resonate most easily with his method of thinking, and he has begun experimenting on his own methods to determine if he can improve upon all his efforts. The results have been mixed. On the one hand, he certainly realizes he works best with precision devices, particularly clockworks. On the other hand, forcing a device into that paradigm is not always a particularly good idea, and some of his devices suffer for being made in the image of his chosen aesthetic.

These days, Reathin mostly splits his time between working in 12th's less critical labs (aside from being an unseated nobody, he prefers to work in less traveled areas anyway. He finds it easier to focus) and doing field work in the living world. Whether that includes testing actual devices or merely data gathering varies by mission, although Reathin almost always gets distracted upon their completion and spends more time in the mortal realm than is strictly necessary. The contrast between modern society and the slightly archaic Soul Society is one of the many things that hold his interest, and he has lately begun trying to narrow down where on Earth he seems to have come from. So far, he has gotten no further than country, but his insistent efforts to narrow down his path may yet yield results if he makes a proper breakthrough. Since he cannot afford to devote all of his time to that little mystery, it is likely he will not find out who he is any time soon.

Combat

Strengths

Control of reiatsu flows comes naturally to Reathin, allowing him to use kidou considerably more efficiently and potently than normal for his level. He is also very quick and coordinated.

Weaknesses

Reathin's lack of muscle is no illusion. He has considerably lower raw attack strength than many others. Further, his body is quite fragile and takes hits more poorly than others.
