Appearance
Raito is a tall and muscular built man. He wears a baggy uniform but surprisingly it doesn't impede his movements. Raito has a very unique style and tends to keep his hair messy just to make a statement almost. Many scars across his body distinguish him as a battle worn veteran. His most distinctive scar runs down his face, given to him during the fight for his life with Totaku.
Raito has haunting steel grey colored eyes that reflect like glass. His hair is a jet black that is messy and flows down just short of shoulder length.
Personality
Raito is calm and collected in battle and will never let someone down if he can help it. His loyalty to friends and squad are the most important things to him. In the 13 squads Raito finds a deep respect towards anyone he deems a worthy ally or rival. When he is put in a bad mood or those he cares about are in trouble the mild mannered shinigami will do all it takes to save them and take out whoever dared hurt them.
Raito has a much softer side though when not doing business or fighting. A joker through and through he tries to lighten up the mood and have a good time when he can. He is somewhat of a womanizer but he knows when not to go too far. His nature is to be helpful to those around him but sometimes he just needs time to himself. Things from the past haunt him sometimes and this affects him in many ways when memories are triggered or he is by himself to think about it.
History
Raito was born into poverty on the streets of Rukongai. Living in some of the tough parts of Rukongai he strived to survived in the darker reaches of Soul Society. As a child he found great purpose in banding together with others to survive in this god forsaken land. Quick hands and a sharp wit kept him and his friends alive living on the streets.
As he grew up he naturally gained a strong will to fight and protect. He always looked out for those few he was able to hold onto. Over the years though in the tough parts of Rukongai despite his efforts Raito lost many friends. Both him and his friends knew that he was destined to be more than just a street rat though and his dreams kept him going. His loyalty to his friends kept him there though. When finally one of his dearest friends died before his eyes Raito pledged to become stronger and make something of himself. Along with the last two of his closely knit friends they decided they needed to escape this life and enrolled in the shinigami academy.
Passing his entrance exam with flying colors he was inducted into the school and began his training. Finding many strong people around him he realized this is where he belonged, striving to become stronger and stronger and gaining the respect of his peers. Since he was from Rukongai he was treated with prejudice by many but few could deny his skill. Many years on the street had taught him to survive, fight, and ignore those who would impede his progress. After years of tireless training Raito graduated in the top percentile of his class. Proving himself to those who had doubted him was an achievement he would keep with him for a very long time.
It was at this time when he became a full fledged shinigami that he decided he would not rest until he could prove to all of soul society that a boy from Rukongai can be just as important as any noble. Spending most of his free time improving his skills those around him took notice of his prowess and some of the higher ranking shinigami even wanted to see what would become of this boy in good time.
While not training much of the time Raito spent studying of hanging out in some of the nightspots around Seiretei. It was in this time he reunited with one of his close friends from Rukongai named Totaku. Finding a great sparring partner and friend within Totaku the two of them determined they would both race for the top together. This gave Raito another purpose to succeed and a friend to help along the way.
It was on a seemingly normal mission years later that things took there turn and Raito's future changed. Totaku and Raito were on a simple hollow elimination order but after a short time of fighting they realized something was wrong. More hollows flowed from Hueco Mundo to join the fight. The two friends fought side by side just trying to survive. It hit Raito that all their live they had just tried to survive and after all their training and years of work it almost seemed like the location had changed but they were still the two scared children on the streets of Rukongai. During the battle Raito was stabbed through the side and left incapacitated. Back-up was on its way but it still looked grim. Before passing out all Raito could see was Totaku frantically trying to fend off the hollows and protect the both of them. Then everything was just a pitch black. Awakening in the 4th division barracks he was surprised to even still be alive. He learned that the reinforcements had made it in time to save him. Raito though found out that Totaku in the struggle to protect him had been injured beyond saving. Devastated at the loss of his friend Raito spent the remaining days recovering and cursing himself for not being stronger.
After his release Raito decided he would not put anybody else in danger again. Requesting a leave of absence after just recovering and witnessing the death of his dear friend Raito had made up his mind. At this time he ventured out to do some private training. In the woods he trained harder than he had ever before. Determined to become strong enough to defend all his friends he promised to himself he would not return until he was ready. Straining himself till he could hardly stand he trained tirelessly everyday for an entire year. His childhood had prepared him enough to survive out in the wilderness and through this year he became more powerful than anyone had expected.
Upon returning to Seiretei Raito had become a more serious and concentrated warrior. From this time on he was not going to let his weakness cost anyone their lives. Raito had found new confidence in himself and a new and more powerful purpose to become better. It was at this time he decided he was not going to rest until he was excepted into the ranks of the 13 divisions elite. Only when he reached a level of power akin to the captains could he fulfill his obligation to Totaku.
Combat
Strengths
Raito is a very agile shinigami who specialized himself in swordplay almost every day when he was in the academy. Able to preform split second attacks he can keep up with many opponents even in the most dire conditions. When fighting he tends to use a fencing style almost which gives him the ability to sometimes freely use his other hand.
Being a quick learner he takes on new techniques very quickly. His body strength and abilities improve at a very steady rate and because of this in battle he is often able to squeeze out a little extra energy when needed even in a very exhausted condition. Even though not as adept at it as he is with swordplay Raito has a very high potential for using kidō.
Weaknesses
Unwilling to let others be hurt Raito tends to put himself in higher degrees of danger if anyone else is involved. In some instances he has the tendency to strain himself to the brink in order to accomplish his mission sometimes proving detrimental to his health. Raito has the unfortunate habit of underestimating his foes and that leaves him open sometimes to unexpected shows of power from an opponent he deemed a small threat.
From many injuries in the past through missions and training a weak ribcage is a weak point for him. A hard solid blow has a high risk of cracking his ribs. Although he is serious when needed he tends to like to enjoy a good fight and therefore will sometimes fool around in a playful and taunting fashion to some opponents, this seems to make things worse for him in the fights he can't afford to goof around with.
