Onisatsu Tamagushi (Demon slaying Jewel skewer) is Hotarubi Tomoe's Zanpakutō.
Onisatsu Tamagushi is a simple-looking, yet elegant sword. Its handle is made of black polished wood, with a golden ring where the handle stops and the blade begins. The saya (sheath) is a parasol of the same black wood as the handle of the katana. The parasol's fabric is white with pink cherry blossoms to design it. The parasol is actually a weapon on its own, sporting a poisoned needle launcher, grappling hooks and a hidden blade.

Spirit Description

Onisatsu Tamagushi is a nekomata, or two-tailed cat. It has a black fur coat, golden claws, green eyes and a green gem on its forehead. From its neck to the beginning of its tails streams a mane of green fire, which splits and runs down each tail. The cat is 5 feet at the shoulders and resembles a leopard in body structure. Onisatsu Tamagushi resides in a vast world with a stationary sun and often blue sky. The ground is a smooth black stone which stretches endlessly. In the center of its world stands a black tower, very tall and smooth, with two doors, one facing the unmoving sun, and the other on top of the tower. Onisatsu Tamagushi never leaves the vicinity of the tower. He is always seen standing on the top, climbing the walls or patrolling the grounds round it.

Personality-wise, Onisatsu Tamagushi is very encouraging and supportive. While more talkative than Tomoe, Tamagushi is quite obedient and will never disobey her, and although it may express doubts about some of Tomoe's ideas sometimes, it never loses faith in her and trusts her to make the right decisions. Tamagushi is blunt and quite undiplomatic as regards most other people, but it has a soft spot for Tomoe and will never upbraid her.

Shikai

Release Command: Jigoku Kokushi chi nagase! (Shed the blood of the King of Hell!) Onisatsu Tamagushi takes the form of a huge polearm. The length of the staff is about 5 feet long, and the staff ends with a green gem and a ring attached to the gem. Tied to the ring is a long pink ribbon, about 5 feet long, and light enough to be blown easily by a breeze, but about as strong as Tomoe's zanpakutō (a sword will not cut it). On the other end of the staff is a blade, almost as wide as Tomoe's body is wide. It is also almost as long as from her head to her waist. The blade is black with a golden edge and four uniform circular holes run along the flat of the blade. A 'jitte'-like prong proceeds out of the blunt side of the blade. Where the blade meets the staff, there is another green gem.

Shikai Abilities

Temizuya (Purification Fountain)

This first ability generates a unique barrier on the ribbon of the polearm, and the ribbon gets tiny green arcane-looking scribblings down its entire length. Tomoe will use her willpower to make the ribbon wrap around a target. After a second, the gem on the bottom of Onisatsu Tamagushi glows, and all effects on the target will be absorbed into Onisatsu Tamagushi. This includes pains, wounds, poison effects, etc., which have been inflicted under the space of an hour, meaning that Temizuya will not work on someone with a wound older than an hour. Also, Temizuya cannot return strength or depleted reiatsu. Temizuya cannot work on a dead person.

A split second after the gem at the bottom of Onisatsu Tamagushi glows, the gem at the base of the blade will begin to glow brightly, and the glow of the other gem will fade. When this happens, Tomoe has 8 seconds to hit a foe with Onisatsu Tamagushi's blade. If she does, all effects absorbed into the blade will be transferred to the hit target. The edge doesn't need to hit; as long as any part of Onisatsu Tamagushi's blade hits the target, it will transfer. If Tomoe fails to hit the opponent, all effects are transferred to her. Tomoe cannot use the Temizuya on a lifeless structure, but if the target has reiatsu and is sentient, effects absorbed by Temizuya can be transferred to it. Tomoe can use Temizuya on herself, but if effects are transferred to Tomoe, Temizuya will not work on her.

Ujigami (Guardian Spirit)

This ability creates another unique barrier, an incandescent green shield, whose initial shape is subject to Tomoe's will. Once formed, the shield will remain even after Onisatsu Tamagushi is sealed, until Tomoe dispels it mentally, at which rate she must wait 5 seconds before she can create another one. Its size may vary, but cannot be bigger than 1000m3 (volume of 10x10x10 meters). This barrier is unique in the sense that it repels physical force and absorbs kidō, both inside and outside it. The Ujigami shield takes about a second to form. The shield can be broken by an opponent with equal or higher reiatsu than Tomoe. If the foe is on an equal strength level, it would take probably one of their hardest attacks to breach the Ujigami. Tomoe can move the Ujigami, but with so much concentration that she cannot engage someone in combat while moving the shield.

Daikyou (Great Curse)

This ability is simply a forceful way of dispelling the Ujigami. The Ujigami gathers all the reiatsu stored in it (whether absorbed from kidō, or the kidō used to create the shield), and detonates. The size of the explosion is directly proportional to the amount of reiatsu in the Ujigami. The largest radius of an explosion caused by the Daikyou is 30 meters.

Strengths

Onisatsu Tamagushi has a good range, and is quite balanced, making for easy handling by Tomoe. Since the blade is quite heavy, it adds more power to the strength of Tomoe’s blows.
The Temizuya can easily end a battle quickly, even against a very powerful foe, if Tomoe can just land a hit.
Ujigami is quite a powerful shield, resistant to most attacks, and giving Tomoe’s preference to defensive battles, this comes in quite handy.
Daikyou can be used to attack a group of enemies, as long as they are congregated together.

Weaknesses

Onisatsu Tamagushi is a long weapon, and fighting in cramped quarters will be hard for Tomoe, since she cannot swing the polearm.
As easily as Temizuya can finish a battle in Tomoe's favor, it can finish her off just as easily. If Tomoe cannot transfer effects after absorbing them into Onisatsu Tamagushi, she will bear them herself. If the wounds absorbed were life threatening, the battle may well be over.
Ujigami is stationary, and is not easily moved. As a result, Tomoe must stay confined to an area if she wants to protect herself with it. This will reduce her mobility. Also, Tomoe cannot make more than one shield at a time, so her usage of it is limited.
Finally, Daikyou’s explosion is uncontrollable once triggered, and can easily harm Tomoe’s friends. So she cannot use it anyhow she pleases when fighting in a group.

Bankai

Bankai Name: Tennoukihashi Amenonuhoko (Tennoukihashi means ‘Floating bridge of Heaven’. Amenonuhoko is the spear that the deity Izanagi used to stir the primordial mists and form the islands of Japan. It can be translated to mean Divine Jeweled Spear)

Tennoukihashi Amenonuhoko takes the form of a naginata, with a red gem replacing its guard and a jitte prong projecting from its reverse edge. A long blood-red ribbon emanates from the end of the staff of the naginata, and it billows as if borne on an unperceived wind. Like the shikai variant, it is as strong as the zanpakutō itself. From the spot where Tomoe releases her bankai, four spectral torii gates appear, each 200 meters from her position, and facing the four cardinal points. Arching from over one gate to the other are two huge bridges that cross over the spot where Tomoe released. The gates and the bridge are a glowing translucent red and are intangible. They do not really affect the environment in any way. All abilities of this bankai cannot work on something beyond the threshold of the four torii gates. If Tomoe leaves the threshold, her bankai will seal away.

Bankai Abilities

Yamadera Temizuya (Mountain Temple Purification Fountain)

This is simply an evolution of Temizuya. Tomoe can trigger this ability by naming the technique, and the target to be healed is bathed in a red glow, transferring the effects affecting it to Tomoe’s zanpakutō. The gem that makes the naginata’s guard then begins to glow, and as usual, Tomoe has 8 seconds to hit someone else with the naginata’s blade. The first major variation from Temizuya, however, is that Tomoe can reduce or increase the potency of the effect absorbed into her zanpakutō by 3. Meaning that when the effect is transferred, it can be one and a half times as strong or just as weak. A cut will be 3 times deeper or shallower; poisons will be 3 times more or less potent, etc. But Tomoe must decide as soon as the gem on her zanpakutō glows whether it will be reduced or increased effects. If she cannot decide, the effects will be the same. If she has chosen to increase the effects, she cannot change her mind, and vice versa.

The second major variation is that it is the zanpakutō that shoulders the backlash effects of the healing, not Tomoe, if not transferred to another person. The extent to which Tennoukihashi Amenonuhoko can do that depends on whether Tomoe has chosen to increase or reduce the potency of the effect. But the problem is that no matter the effect absorbed, a number of Tennoukihashi Amenonuhoko’s torii gates will break if the effect is transferred to it. If the effect’s potency is increased, all the gates will break. If reduced, only one gate will break. If the effect has not been increased or reduced, two gates will break. Once all the gates break, Tomoe’s zanpakutō will seal itself and the blade will break in two. However, Tomoe can still transfer the effects of the Temizuya to herself.

Seisaiden Ujigami (Sacred Sanctuary Guardian Spirit)

An upgrade of the Ujigami, this ability simply gives Tomoe much more control over her Ujigami barriers. She can now make at most ten barriers (as usual, she must create them close to her) which she can move easily and as fast as she herself can move. The shields can go as far as the limit of her bankai (the threshold of the gates). These barriers have the same properties as their shikai variant, only they are red this time, their combined volume cannot be more that 30mx30mx30m i.e. 27000m³, and Tomoe can detonate them now with a thought. When her bankai is sealed, the shields will remain, unless her zanpakutō was broken, in which case they will disappear. Concerning creation time, the time taken to form the shields is almost instantaneous and Tomoe can create 10 shields at the same time, but if she dispels any or all of them, or they break, she must still wait 5 seconds to be able to make any more shields. Their maximum explosion radius is thrice as much as their shikai variant, i.e. 90 meters.

Strengths

The naginata form of Tomoe’s bankai has good reach and is lighter than its shikai counterpart, making it easier and faster to swing. Yamadera Temizuya can now much more easily end a battle, in the sense that magnifying the effect of the Temizuya’s effect transfer can cause what could be termed as simply a serious wound to become almost fatal. Also, since Tomoe’s zanpakutō can bear the effects now, Tomoe can fight for longer periods of time. Seisaiden Ujigami is more versatile now and is capable of defending or even striking against up to 10 opponents without hampering Tomoe’s mobility. With Yamadera Temizuya and Seisaiden Ujigami, Tomoe doesn’t need to be near her target to use them.

Weaknesses

As a polearm still, fighting in cramped quarters is still a disadvantage, as swinging is harder to perform there. Just as Tomoe can end a battle quicker with Yamadera Temizuya, she can kill herself quicker, or end up breaking her zanpakutō, which would be a serious disadvantage for one who favors zanjutsu as one of her fighting styles. Seisaiden Ujigami still has its ‘reload’ time between the destruction of a shield and creation of a new one (5 seconds). The 5 second lag can leave her open to attacks. The Seisaiden Ujigami is now much more dangerous with its blast radius, and Tomoe must be extra careful not to get any allies in the explosions, which, of course, she cannot control. Finally, all Tomoe’s abilities cannot reach someone outside her bankai perimeter, which is a 400m² square. Since she cannot leave the bankai perimeter without sealing her zanpakutō, she is bound to that particular location.
