Appearance
Although a fairly tall person at 6’1’’ he is not what one would consider a ‘big’ person, being seemingly of rather average build. In actuality Notonay is rather muscular despite his appearance. His eyes are a dark muddy brown and his mottled black hair falls at about shoulder length and that either pulls back under his head band or leavers hanging loosely. He also sports a short beard, essentially a goatee with sideburns and a pair of silver stud earrings in his left ear.
Notonay prefers a mix out of comfort and functionality and as such wears the standard shinigami uniform but usually ties the sleeves so that they hang at around his elbows rather than around his wrist, the idea being that it will free up his hands and make it easier to fight. In hopes of gaining a better grip on his sword he generally wraps his forearms and his hands with white strips of cloth so that only the fingertips are uncovered. These cloth strips are also embroidered with typical ainu designs, such as spirals and waves, all generally in shades of blue or gray. The only other non-standard article of clothing that he wears is a matanpushi that he wears like a bandanna on his head.
Besides his clothing he also carries his zanpakto in its sheath strapped to his waist with its blade edge pointing upwards. He also keeps tonkori he received from Michio strapped to his back with a simple white cord.
Personality
Notonay is a generally calm and mellow person rarely willing to get excited about anything. This is mostly because he prefers life, or death, to simply take him instead of making the mistake of ending this life short as well. Notonay's behaviour, simply accepting life as it happens, can be seen definitely be seen as deferential however he himself believes that it is more of an acceptance that there are times when a person’s actions have a point and times when they are simply futile. As such he prefers to choose his battles and simply avoid other conflict when unnecessary. This however does not simply pertain to actual battles but day to day matters as well, because of this he acts quiet humble towards most people and in particular his superiors, following most orders with little protest as long as he considers them the lesser of the two conflicts.
In battle, Notonay retains his calm demeanour however, anyone watching will notice that it shifts from his usual relaxed and mellow state to something of a more eerily still and quiet. During a battle he is constantly weighing his options, wondering which action presents the best overall outcome, he has a great dislike for wasted energy and as such he acts accordingly. Although not a big fan of violence he is not hesitant to jump in to a fight in order to protect someone, even if all it means is jumping in and grabbing the person before making a run for it. Overall he isn’t afraid to lose his life but is incredibly hesitant to lose it for either for the wrong reason, or worse yet, for none at all.
History
In the year of 1650 A.D. Notonay was born in a small but self sufficient Ainu village in Hokkaido. Even under the increasing pressure of the Wajin at the time, Notonay's parents brought him up as a traditional Ainu. This went even so far that he did not receive his true name until later in life, instead growing up being called Susu. He was even taught how to play the tonkori by his father, an accomplished player himself, this would become his first true interest and one of the few things he ever really cared for. It wasn’t as if he was the only child brought up traditionally, in fact the entire village preferred to follow the Ainu traditions and kept themselves secluded from the both the Wajin and the other Ainu communities.
However even the small village needed to trade every so often and it became apparent at just how much the Wajin were taking advantage of the small Ainu communities. Eventually the problems with the Wajin escalated to a point that open conflict seemed inevitable. It seemed an Ainu leader named Shakushain was going around uniting the Ainu communities and their people in hopes to fight the Wajin off and reclaim their independence. Although at first filled with doubt over the matter, Notonay was unprepared for the sheer charisma that the man seemed to pour from the man. He was quickly swept up in the chaos that followed the outbreak of the revolt. For the next three years he found himself fighting against the Matsumae clan for the sake of his people’s independence, the sad thing is that he couldn’t even understand how he had gotten involved. If that hadn’t been enough, they were fighting against fully armed samurai and ashigaru foot soldiers with what few weapons they had themselves and those they had stolen. The battles were bloody and the Ainu were almost always on the losing side. At one point the revolt was finally suppressed, he wasn't quite sure when anymore they had been running from shogunate troops for so long at that point and Notonay was one of the several conspirators who were rounded up and executed for their defiance of the Matsumae clan.
Eventually he woke up in one of the districts of the Rukongai confused, alone and clutching his neck which swore had been severed only a while ago. Over the next few days he spent his time trying to figure out what had happened and where he was. This just wasn’t anything like what was supposed to happen once you died. After death you were to be rewarded by ascending to the land of the gods and here he was in what were pretty much the slums of what these people called ‘Rukongai’, which was apparently part of Soul Society. He cursed himself many times over for the mess he had gotten himself into back on earth and the mess he was in. It was by pure chance that he one day bumped into an old man named Tanabe Michio. Notonay himself had been running from a shopkeeper after an unsuccessful attempt at stealing some fruit and had knocked right into the diminutive old man. Apologizing quickly and getting up to run, he was surprised when the man pulled him into his small shop and hid him behind the counter as the pursuing shopkeepers ran by.
Confused by the old man’s gesture, he was surprised when he heard that the old man had at one point also been scrounging to survive as Notonay was, although, he admitted, that was a long long time ago. So, knowing his plight, the old man introduced himself as Tanabe Michio offered Notonay a job at his shop. Desperate for work he hastily agreed and introduced himself as well, using the name Susu, and soon became Michios newest, and apparently only, employee. Michio was a carpenter by profession and sold his wares both from his shop and at market places, it ended up as Notonay’s job to haul whatever wares that were to be sold to and from the market or otherwise do any other similarly jobs. He was menial labour, nothing special but it was a step up and he thanked the old man for it. Over the many years that he continued to work for Michio he the two grew to become close friends with the older acting as a sort of mentor to Notonay. He learned of the new world he resided in, Soul Society, but also of other things, most importantly, of shinigami. He still resented himself for allowing himself to be swept into the war like he had been and even now resented himself for being confined to what little the Rukongai had to offer. Wishing to escape the she knew he had to get to a position where he could at least choose which path he took he reasoned that if anyone had that choice it was the shinigami. However he refused to just abandon Michio in the Rukongai, the old man was beginning to really show his age and he meant too much to Notonay to simply leave.
It was inevitable and Notonay knew it had been only a matter of time, but Michio eventually passed away in his bed on the second floor of his shop. In the end it had been Michio who had left and not Notonay. The last thing that he had told to the old man was his true name and how he thanked him for taking him in. Eventually after he had finished mourning the loss of his friend Notonay made preparations to apply for the Shinigami academy. He sold the shop and everything in it, save for his own belongings and a replica tonkori Michio had made as a gift.
Finally he made his way to the academy to earn a place as among the ranks of the shinigami. Throughout his time at the academy he earned his way up through hard work and perseverance. While still in the Rukongai his heritage had been of little notice, there had simply been so many different kinds of people that it hardly mattered where you were from. But in the academy there were those who recognised him as a ‘savage’ and because of the relatively small community of the school and the classes his reputation as an ‘uneducated savage’ continued to circulate. Despite these hardships he knew that it was necessary in the long run and shrugged the barbs off. He was there to learn and not to deal with idiots. He ploughed through required course material and kidō scrolls alike, he needed to learn. He spent hours training with the faux-zanpaktos at the academy, he needed to train. He poured over notes of hollows and renegade shinigami, he needed to understand. He spent little of his free time not working and only allowed himself a break when he knew he needed it. The work showed and he was soon among the top in almost all of his classes. He earned his teachers praise and he gradually earned his classmates respect.
After all the hard work and effort it was finally time for him to graduate and stand among the real shinigami of the Gotei 13. Most celebrated at the occasion, some even broke down and cried in happiness. It was, after all, a great accomplishment to make it so far, so of course people were proud to have made it. It should have been a momentous occasion for Notonay, rising from public disdain to a well respected classmate and passing among the best of them. He should have been cheering for himself and yelling to the world how great it was. He didn’t, what he did do was let smile creep on to his face, a small one, but nonetheless, a real smile. Practice is over, time for the real challenge.
Combat
Strengths
Adept Swordsman – Although he had never actually used a sword as a weapon before he was surprised to find that he had a natural talent with the blade and has since continued to try and develop his abitlity, it being one of the few subjects he has ever shown much interest in.
Tranquillity – Where others might flare up in anger, break in fear or become overly excited, Notonay is more than likely to simply shrug it off with the same half-hearted expression that seems permanently plastered on his face.
Weaknesses
Ainu vs. Wajin - Notonay has understadably developed a mistrust for those he consider 'Wajin' this mostly pertains to any shinigami or spirits of Wajin descent that he knows or believes were alive during the time of Hokkaidoes oppression but also toa lesser degree any 'Wajin' in possions of power over him.
Uneducated – Notonay has never received any formal education besides what he received at the Academy. As such he has little comprehension for complicated things like mechanics or physics or chemistry. This is not to say he’s stupid, he simply has no knowledge to base anything off of.
