Appearance
Minoru is a well-groomed, muscular man in the appearance of his late middle age, with his hair kept very short and ruler-straight. He is of extremely strict posture, and gives the impression of military training whenever he is sitting or standing. He adheres tightly to the shinigami uniform, with no departure from it at all; in his leisure time he continues wearing the uniform, but does not iron it. He is about 183 cm tall and weighs nearly 80 kg (he refuses to give details on this). He often carries a large attache case, in which he keeps the tools of his trade.
Personality
Minoru is a stickler to rules, believing that discipline is the very foundation of knowledge—and he wants to amass all the knowledge he can about the healing arts. Having set knowledge above almost everything else, he also keeps himself in extreme good health—in corpore sano mens sana is one of the codes by which he lives. Minoru lives, when not otherwise occupied by orders, on a strict regimen of exercise and sleep and cooking all his own food. He has a constant obsession with finding a way to sleep in the open air at night, but still manage to filter out all ambient light, sound, and insects.
History
The life of Kamiya Minoru began in a small hut in the 35th District of Rukongai, and very nearly ended that same night when his father came back in a drunken haze, decided that the family was too poor for another squalling brat, and almost threw him out there and then.
At least, that's what he was always told when growing up; his earliest memories mostly involve playing in the muddy streets and watching other men get up and go to work and sometimes not come back—it was always a slightly We're-Sad-But-We-Can't-Really-Help-It mood when accidents occurred and people died. Not that he understood that when young; it was just that sometimes people didn't come back and then people would wail for a long time and he wouldn't be allowed into the streets to play.
He eventually started to get old enough to be a contributor to the local workforce, and got put on a farm where the beginnings of his disciplinarian life began: waking early and sleeping late, years on end, with an ever-shifting cast of people; and all through it he saw people get into accidents, or heard of them, and was careful himself never to get into one.
It must have been fate laughing at him the day he got hit on the head by a stray beer bottle flying out of a bar that he was passing by—a brawl was going on inside and he happened to be collateral damage. When he woke up he had stitches on his head and he owed the local doctor a lot of money.
He repaid that by working as an apprentice to the doctor for the next fifty or so years, and was there to see the riots against the shinigami fail badly and produce a great deal of wounded people to deal with. It was then that he decided that his medical knowledge was insufficient—he needed to somehow learn more, and the best medical knowledge—everybody said so—was in the libraries of Orinoko Senna the Captain.
He enrolled in the Academy the next day, graduating with decent grades in everything, but with the best grades in kidō and hakuda, thanks to his well-maintained physique.
Combat
Strengths
He has immense strength, both physically and in terms of reiatsu, thus allowing him to be able to cast more kidō than the average shinigami without tiring, as well as making his kidō somewhat stronger than usual.
His medical knowledge also allows him to give immediate attention to injuries (whether his own or others'), as well as land his attacks in places so as to cause or exacerbate potent attacks.
Weaknesses
He doesn't like swords; the rough handle of the katana causes calluses on his fingers, which affects his sense of touch. Unfortunately, this deprives him of both range and a cutting edge in melee battles; he also loses the ability to parry incoming sharp attacks.
In addition, Minoru's sense of rightness makes him insist on reciting the full incantation of every kidō he casts, losing him precious time in battles and often giving away his intentions to the opponent. He will also not hide from battle, and will not attack an opponent who cannot see his attacks coming.
Minoru does not like to kill humanoids—hollows are a natural phenomenon and he will exterminate them like flies, but if it demonstrates sentient thought, he will be more likely to attempt non-fatal attacks far longer than what common sense would dictate.
