Appearance

Matsudi

Due to the fact that white haori are the garb of the Captain rank, Matsudi wears his noble's coat folded twice and tucked into the left side of his belt, where his Zanpakutō is tucked in over it. This is used as a symbol of respect to his superiors in the Gotei 13. Matsudi also has a scar running along the left side of his face.

Personality

Matsudi is calm and pleasant in behaviour, having a strong respect for the chain of command. Due to his strict upbringing, he can find it difficult to simply see one of a higher rank as simple a friend, always standing to attention and accidentally referring to them as sir or ma'am. Despite his own opinions on how to act toward superiors however, he constantly attempts to make those lower in rank to himself feel that they can come to him with their troubles, living by the concept given by his parents that showing respect to others is the greatest way to gain their respect. Attempting to be humble despite his noble upbringing, he occasionally slips and shows a more arrogant side to himself, upon catching himself he immediately apologises and attempts to correct his error.

In battle, Matsudi is a fearless but chivalrous opponent, always choosing to fight on fair ground with opponents. His chivalrous nature can get him in trouble however, when he has the power to defeat an opponent easily but insists upon fighting them equally, it can also pose problems due to his philosophy of battling only in self-defence or the defence of those incapable of fighting for themselves. Fortunately, he is well aware when it is and isn't wise to fight, and will retreat from battle which is impossible to win unless ordered to stand and fight. All in all, Matsudi is an approachable individual, and considered likeable by most.

History

Matsudi was born into a minor noble household living in the Rukongai 1st District. The household was known for a long line of Shinigami, all of which had been hailed as excellent swordsmen and were very similar in skill and style of combat. The family could boast of having at least four in the rank of Captain throughout of the history of the Shinigami, and it was this history that put so much weight on the shoulders of the young son and heir of the household. He was tutored in their arts from an early age, likely seven or eight years. He would study the arts of zanjutsu, as well as politics amongst other more scholarly teachings.

It wasn’t the easiest of lives for the young boy. He had few friends and those he did were his own tutors, who were of course much older then he himself was. His nobility made him arrogant, to begin with, looking down upon others in the lesser and more derelict districts of the Rukongai. But, this opinion and attitude soon changed when he and his family were forced to travel through some of these derelict areas, to reach a meeting with a sort of political ally of his father. Matsudi was shocked by what he saw in these places, of course he had been told about how the people in these places were all criminals, but upon seeing it for himself he could hardly blame.

A great deal of time passed, constantly he wondered why his family were not sending him off to the academy yet, but they insisted always he had more to learn there first. Perhaps it was due to his family restricting his learning, that he was unable to become more proficient in other techniques of the Shinigami, though kidō was something he had never has any talent for despite his tutors attempting to teach him the basics. Finally, he was allowed to travel to the Academy to learn there. His parents, strict but caring as they were saw him off, proud to see their son leaving to follow in their household’s so called footsteps.

Due to their abilities as excellent fighters, many of his past family members had been put into the more combat heavy divisions, the 7th, 9th and 11th respectively. These were the divisions he expected himself to be placed in, which left a bitter taste in his mouth at the thought. He entered the Academy, and his time there was spent with many people disliking him for his noble birth, they saw him as arrogant still and it was likely he indeed was. So he changed himself, became more politely and approachable, managing to make a considerable number of friends this way. These friendly would become invaluable to him, though they would be unfortunately split up upon graduation.

Before graduation however, a group of hollow somehow broke into the Rukongai district, not very powerful it was decided the students of the academy should deal with them as a training exercise. During his exercise, Matsudi was attacked by a considerably more vicious hollow, attempting to rescue a group of who were being advanced upon. It gave him a nasty scar on the left of his face, and it was during this battle he first heard the voice of his Zanpakutō taunting him, telling him it could save him if he only know the right world. This word he did not learn, though the spirit of his Zanpakutō continued to speak to him.

The instructors soon put an end to the hollow, and despite medical aid from the 4th Division the scar never fully healed. Graduation came a few days later, and awaiting his drafting into one of the three expected Divisions, he was surprised to end up drafted into the 6th Division. After some worry about what his parents would think of this, he felt a certain relief over being drafted into this division. The other three of course suited his abilities in combat, but none of them truly suited his personality he was no bounty hunter, or hot-headed warrior. Now perhaps, he would get to aid those living in the poverty of the lesser districts.

Combat

Strengths

--- Matsudi's noble household were hailed as excellent swordsmen, as such from an early age Matsudi was brought up on Zanjutsu, making his skills in the discipline of Shinigami swordsmanship highly exceptional.
--- It was in fact during that training mission where he was scarred, that Matsudi's Zanpakutō spirit first spoke to him. Though he does not yet know how to release the Zanpakutō's spirit, he can at least converse with the spirit within it the name of which he is yet to learn.
--- His family, amongst other things taught him what was needed to understand the tactics of combat, when to fight and when to retreat were important factors.

Weaknesses

--- Horrible kidō skills and bad reiatsu manipulation. In fact, Matsudi's kidō is so subpar that an attempt at performing such abilities would likely result in a backfire, though he can manipulate his reiatsu just enough to not do any damage with it accidentally, but beyond that he can do little to nothing. This simply 'one of those things', as it was attempted to teach him the basics, he just never managed to pick it up.
--- Basic Hohō is about all Matsudi has managed to learn the technique of, and is all he is likely to ever master in such arts. His family saw Hohō as lacking importance, other than the basic ability to avoid more quickly in combat, it was to them, otherwise useless.
--- Being brought up on the blade, Matsudi's hand-to-hand skills were never worked on and so he has no technique in hand-to-hand, and at most can boast a thuggish style of fighting with no refinement whatsoever.
