Appearance
Kyoku is a fairly grim looking character, with a drawn face and ever-present frown framed by straight, greasy dark grey hair. This hair is slicked back in a neat ponytail which starts low on his head, more like a modern do than the topknots of his era. Three or four stray hairs tend to escape his ponytail and hang in front of his face after considerable exertion. Further maintaining Kyoku’s grim persona is a long scar that runs from the bottom of his right eye across the right corner of his mouth. However, the first thing everybody notices about Kyoku is his left arm. Rather, everyone notices the fact that he is missing his left arm; all that is left of it is a small stump at the shoulder. In order to prevent the empty sleeve of his Shinigami’s kimono from getting in the way during training or combat, the sleeve is tucked into the kimono, giving the impression that his right hand is always inside his robe.
Personality
Kyoku acts exceedingly pessimistic and grim, almost sepulchral, most of the time, and is not particularly social or polite. On the contrary, he is considered by most to be very rude. He will talk right over people if he thinks he is saying something more important, shows no respect at all for his elders or superiors, and often acts slightly egotistic concerning his combat abilities. For being in the eleventh division, he is quite levelheaded most of the time, and has never been seen to laugh.
Despite this, Kyoku is overall a good guy. Although he is very coarse and rude, he operates on a personal code of chivalry and will not ignore corruption or injustice, even if the odds are impossibly against him. However, he is will not mindlessly attack someone stronger than he is; if he finds himself an enemy of one much stronger than he, he will attempt to find a way to weaken or find a way outside of combat to defeat him, her or it.
He enjoys sword duels and thinks of swordplay as sport; thus he often challenges enemies and allies alike to formal one-one duels, either as a friendly challenge or a serious duel to the death.
History
Kyoku is notoriously tight-lipped about his personal history, and no one save himself knows exactly what happened in the early years of his life. In fact, the Gotei 13 were not even aware of his existence until he suddenly turned up one day, the apparent loser a brawl in the dead center of Rukongai’s second district. Shinigami rushed to the scene and found nothing but a plus lying in the middle of a pool of blood, his left arm gone. Although the man was unconscious, a sword was clenched in his remaining hand. To this date, no one knows exactly how the mysterious man lost his arm or what happened that day, in the only act of violence to occur to this date in the second district.
However, shinigami did sense a high level of spirit power in the plus, and set about training the enigmatic man, whom they dubbed Kyoku, Tumbler, because of his peculiar acrobatic fighting style. “Kyoku” almost never spoke during his training, but threw himself at it with impressive drive, quickly sharpening his already noteworthy swordplay skills to the point where he managed to become an unseated member of the eleventh division.
Currently, Kyoku is an average member of the division but keeps to himself, not appearing to seek promotion nor attempting to meet other Shinigami. However, he still is plagued by his small reputation as the only person ever to be attacked in the second district; people have spread so many rumors about him and, in particular, his arm, that he always manages to turn a few heads when he is out in public. As over-the-top as some of the rumors are, he does seem at times to follow his own agenda…
Combat
Strengths
Good Swordsman: Kyoku is skilled in the art of swordplay, along the level of a commendable amateur.
Sense of Balance: He has an impeccable sense of balance, considering he has only one arm.
Unique Fighting Style: Kyoku earned his name from his own peculiar style of swordplay: He utilizes much more movement than is strictly necessary, never standing still and incorporating cartwheels, summersaults, leaps, hops, bounds, flips, and god knows what else while fighting, all while staying in very close quarters. Can be described as the stereotypical “Whirling Dervish” while in combat. This makes him highly unpredictable and can cause less experienced fighters to lose their cool.
Weaknesses
Bad Kidō: Although he is an impressive swordsman, Kyoku’s Kidō skills are absolutely abysmal; he is absolutely unable to perform hadou or bakudou well enough to get the slightest effect.
Only One Arm: This gets in the way of a lot of things, an example being that he can only attack with the force of one hand.
Unique Fighting Style: Kyoku’s way of fighting also offers some drawbacks. First of all, he is absolute crap at fighting in cramped quarters. Second, his undisciplined fighting style usually causes him to give about five times as many openings as normal; if someone can exploit them, he’s doomed.
