Appearance
Kiyoshiro stands at a height of 5 feet 11 inches and has an athletic build. He normally wears the standard shinigami outfit and usually keeps his hair tied into a high ponytail.
Personality
Kiyoshiro is your average friendly guy at first glance, believing that trust, loyalty and friendship stand above all else when its not related to duty. But when carrying out his missions a new aspect of his personality surfaces as he becomes a rather cold hearted individual, calculating every move before making them. This attitude is the result of what he considers his greatest failure in his past life and the vow to never let it happen again. But as sometimes happens friendship and duty can end up on opposite sides of the fight and in such a case he’ll almost always make the safe bet and go with duty. Only a valued friend will make him betray his sense of duty.
The only other thing that will divert his attention from duty is his past, more especially his dead sister as he’s still looking for her to this day. Any person looking like her or any snippet of information about her will be chased by him, the end result often sending him into a mild depression or even a fit or rage.
History
Born in the city of Yamagata Kiyoshiro had a rather average childhood as the second son of a shop owner. Neither rich nor poor he was allowed to spend his first seven years of life playing and wandering around with the other children. Then the Meiji-era began and things got a little harder then they had been during his first few years. This forced Kiyoshiro to abandon his carefree childhood and help out in the shop along with his elder brother (Ginjo) and two younger sisters (Kimiko and Asami).
As nine more years passed things were looking up again for Shionoya family as the business was going so well that Kiyoshiro’s father was able to expand it a little, providing his family with a better lifestyle then it had during the end of the Edo-period. Having worked along side his siblings in the shop for the past six years Kiyoshiro gained back little of his freedom now that his family could afford to hire help instead of doing all the work themselves. Using his newfound freedom Kiyoshiro started studying a little self-defence because of the many rumours of fallen samurai and such that were spreading amongst the common people.
More years went by and the day came that Kiyoshiro turned twenty. His brother already left the house and had taken over one of the shops his father owned and now he thought it was finally time to move out as well. But a few days before he planned to leave his father asked him to escort his sister, Kimiko, to her fiancé so they could spend some time together before their upcoming wedding. The fiancé was a long time friend of Kiyoshiro who he hadn’t seen in a long time so there was no reason for him to object to this request. Leaving the next morning for the fiancé’s village both his sister and he looked forward to meeting the man again and were in a rather cheerful mood. Sadly faith declared it would be a sad day for they were ambushed by three road bandits. Having nothing but a knife with him Kiyoshiro tried to protect his sister as best as he could but it was a lost battle from the start ending with him being left for dead.
Two days later he woke up in the house of a nearby farmer who had found the young man on the road, bleeding badly and unconscious. Kiyoshiro’s first question was ‘where is my sister’ but the farmer merely replied that he was the only one he had found that day. Shocked and lost Kiyoshiro kept asking the same question over and over before finally deciding to get up and go look for her himself. Weak as he was he struggled back to the place where the farmer had found him only to find a vague bloodstain, the only thing that remained from that day. Four more days he spend searching for his sister, each night collapsing from fatigue and pain then rising once more to search without rest. Finally he came upon the idea of having her fiancé help in the search, cursing himself for his foolishness he made his way towards the man’s house hoping he didn’t already waste too much time. The fiancé quickly agreed to help but to no avail. In the two weeks they searched but found no trace of Kimiko leaving both with a broken heart and sad news to take to Kiyoshiro’s parents.
After delivering the heart breaking news to his parents Kiyoshiro isolated himself, blaming himself from being unable to protect his sister. For five months he kept waking up from nightmares involving his sister and the unspeakable horrors that his imagination conjured up to haunt him during the day. Neither friend nor family was able to get him to speak during this period. But after those months his younger sister, Asami finally managed to take him outside. During that time Kiyoshiro caught a glimpse of a man that looked like one of the robbers. Quickly dashing after the man he got separated from his sister. After a while he finally caught up with the man in an ally and confronted him. But instead of the expected denial or such the man simply drew his tanto and stabbed Kiyoshiro. Surprised at the sudden pain Kiyoshiro couldn’t help but stare at his attacker, his last thoughts being that he had finally found Kimiko’s kidnapper but being unable to do anything about it.
And what felt like moments later he woke up in an unfamiliar place. Unable to comprehend what had happened he was quickly and patiently informed by some people near him. From now Rukongai’s 12th district would be his home, he would never see his family again nor get a chance to get his sister out of the hands of those thugs. Those words hit him like a hammer, leaving him out of it for days. He even lost his will to do anything until months later he heard there was a way to return to the normal world. And that way was called Shinigami.
Failing twice before being accepted into the ranks of students Kiyoshiro studied diligently for he couldn’t wait until he was allowed back to earth. But as the years past he began to realise that even if he got back it wouldn’t mean he would be send back to Japan and even then it could be that both his sister and her kidnappers were long gone. Almost slipping back into depression he met a fellow shinigami student that would change his view on things. Little does he remember of the man’s actual words but they inspired him somehow to go out and stop hollows from eating innocent souls. He even got a little hope back of meeting his sister as she could have ended up like him or perhaps she still wandered the earth as a soul.
Having a set of new goals to commit himself to Kiyoshiro began training more seriously again. He even socialized a little and gained a few friends along the way. As his training progressed he found it hard but rewarding, being rather average at both kidō and hand to hand combat Kiyoshiro focused mostly on swordplay. Favouring agility over strength he quickly picked up his own fighting style that focused on how to avoid rather than block and make quick, precise attacks rather than strong and slow ones.
Finally after what seemed to be years of training the day came that he graduated from the academy. Now a full shinigami Kiyoshiro looks forward to finding his place amongst the many and most of all resuming the search for his sister on earth and in the Rukongai districts.
Combat
Strengths
Having refined his swordsmanship over these past decades Kiyoshiro feels that his sword is as much a part of him as his arms or legs.
Having trained for so long Kiyoshiro has the stamina to fight a long battle
Knowing that his physical strength is nothing to brag about he focuses more on fighting using his skill, agility and wits to win the battle.
Weaknesses
His past is one of his biggest weaknesses since any well placed remark about it may rob him of his concentration or even send him into a fit of rage making him more vulnerable to counter attacks. This is even more apparent when his opponent resembles Kimiko, the sister who disappeared while he should have been protection her. He wont be able to think straight for several moments, let alone fight.
For some strange reason the scar from the stab wound that killed him, though it appears to be healed, remains to trouble him even now. Meaning that if one should hit it he will feel much more pain than normally. (its on the left side of abdomen) For example; a rather weak but well placed hit may knock the wind out of him, leaving him defenceless for several seconds while a very powerful hit could even make him spit up blood. And the more his opponent hits it the more it will hinder his ability to successfully dodge blows and make attacks himself.
