Appearance

Kimiko

Kimiko is short, even for a girl of her age. When measured relative to a fully grown man, she measures at just under waist height. Her build is slender though her face retains traces of puppy fat. She has large brown eyes and long, messy, sandy hair which fans out at the back with a rogue strand of hair known as an 'ahoge' poking up at the top of her head.

Her Shinigami attire is ordinary in all aspects but size, they are actually one size too large; resulting in her hands being mostly hidden by sleeves or Kimiko tripping over the hem of her hakama. Sometimes, Kimiko can be seen wearing her Lieutenant's insignia, though this is rare since it is not a necessity unless she is attending some official function. Her Zanpakutō is usually tucked in her obi, it is the same shape as that of a normal katana but scaled to match Kimiko's size. Her Zanpakutō is cutesque, it's cross-guard is in the shape of an apple that has had a bite taken out of it while the hilt wrap is a gaudy pink colour.

Personality

The first impression that most people have of Kimiko is that she is adorably cute. Her occasional bouts of clumsiness and her apparent lethargic actions often give other Shinigami doubts about her competence, though this can easily be overridden once she's shown her abilities. Kimiko's has a slight lack of sense, sometimes she'll go overboard while demonstrating kidō resulting in cleaners having to be called in. Since becoming a Lieutenant she has become rather helpful when it comes to her squad members in the capacity of training and what limited advice she can offer.

She's rather soft spoken for a girl of her age, preferring to keep her thoughts to herself rather than blurt things out in the spur of the moment. This derives from her reasoning ability, which she developed early on as a child. Additionally, it has led to her problem solvings skills becoming fairly decent.

History

Kimiko was born while her home town of Akihabara was beginning to bloom and grow. Her family owned one of the few remaining traditional inns on the outskirts where they lived a poor, yet comfortable life. She was the pride of her family and was often showered with affection from her elder brother Takashi, who had grown quite attached to her.

Soon after her second year however, the family inn was set on fire by troublemakers. While her mother and father escaped the inn, Kimiko was left behind in the inferno. Her brother, realizing she was not with the rest of the family dashed back in to find her but died trying to rescue her as the burning cinders of what was the inn collapsed, sealing her fate.

When they both awoke in Rukongai, neither of them had memories of their previous lives as humans. But despite this, the bond between the siblings remained with her brother taking up the role of a slightly more fatherly figure. Thankfully they had not been whisked away to separate ends of Rukongai, as Kimiko was still at the ripe age of two and could not has possibly fended for herself in the harsh environment of the outer districts.

Without parents to look after them they found life in Rukongai to be difficult, her brother would take odd jobs to earn them enough food. They called an alleyway home, often gangs from the outer suburbs would come to harrass Kimiko; only to find a furious Takashi behind them wielding a makeshift spear of some sort (a broom).

Over time, the pair grew older slowly and learnt the ways of the spirit world. After many years living in Rukongai, Takashi heard of an Academy in which spirits went to train to become what was known as 'Shinigami', apparently the life as one of those was more posh than being two alley rats. By that time rumours of being hungry while dead was a good indicator that one had a decent amount of spiritual energy; and the pair were always starving.

It was obvious that the pair had some sort of power. Kimiko's seemed to be large and controlled whereas her brother's was just as large, if not larger but was wild and untamed. To the examiners, the pair were a rare sight amongst the many souls that applied for entry into the Spiritual Academy just so they could escape the harsh reality of life in the soul world.

Life in the Academy was difficult for Kimiko due to her small size. Straight off the bat she was told Hakuda and Zanjutsu, would be too difficult for her small stature to handle. As such, she was barred from attending them as the training was much too difficult for a young body such as her own. Kimiko at the time was only allowed to participate in the classes for Kidō and Hohō, which she excelled in due to the concentration on two disciplines rather than trying to learn all four.

She graduated and was placed into the Fourth Division. A special exemption had been made for the younger child, as group classes for Zanjutsu and Hakuda would have been too difficult, she was to learn the basics of the two from a more seasoned Shinigami in one on one lessons. Though despite not being able to enroll in classes for the two martial classes, Kimiko secretly learnt the basics from her brother at night time before she fell asleep in the middle of training.

While in the Fourth Division, Kimiko was assigned to be personally taught by Sanpuu Kikkai, who was then a Vice-Captain for the Fifth Division. Under his guidance, Kimiko's skill at kidō quickly improved exponentially. He helped guide Kimiko through the steps towards attaining Shikai and within a week of being transferred into the Gotei 13 was noticed by the Captain of her Division.

Soon after, Kimiko was promoted to Third Seat of the Fourth Division and assigned the specialist duties of physician and first aid. During Kain's attack on the Eleventh and Kamui's subsequent betrayal of the Shinigami, Kimiko's skill as an officer was noticed by Captain Commander Ikenmaru. She was promoted again to Vice-Captain of the Fifth Division.

Combat

Strengths

Kimiko is fast for her size, being able to vanish in a flicker; this is both a physical and mental strength. Physical because she can dart around a majority of opponents with relative ease and mental because she quite simply doesn't look the part of a fast girl because of both her lethargic posture and expression.

Other than speed, Kimiko's main advantage over others is her skill in kidō. Coming from the Fourth Division and having trained under the Captain of the Fifth Division; she has advanced her skill in the arts greatly. She is able to use both healing, binding and offensive kidō to augument whatever combat style she desires.

Weaknesses

Kimiko quite simply put, is a young girl. Her body is not as developed as other Shinigami and as a result her physical strength is sub-par. This in addition to the fact she received no formal martial art training in the Academy quite simply results in her skills in sword-play and martial arts to be slightly below the average.
