Appearance
There are a great many ways to describe a man such as Joe. Handsome might be one of them, but for most it'd probably just be 'eh, average.' His face as a whole is rather pleasant to look at, a friendly smile usually gracing it. As for his eyes, well they're brown. If one were to look hard enough you might find it to be a hazel nut or nearly amber color, but just from an every-day-not-up-in-his-face-perspective they're just brown...nothing too special at a glance.
His long locks are of a rusty-red(almost orange) color that rest in a thick pony tail protruding from his head right down to his butt. Bangs hang down from both sides of his forehead, often resting on his cheeks until a breeze causes them to dance back and forth. There's one extra little bit of fluff complementing the rest of his hair growing under his lip in the form of a soul patch that, no matter how long he goes without shaving, remains the only bit of facial hair he has.
Joe's figure is well toned from his days of training, but nothing to go as far as to use adjectives like ripped or chiseled. Just average like most of the other aspects of his looks. His height is something else to be said, as for a Japanese man he's actually quite tall at a whopping 1.78meters(5'10") tall. This used to cause him a lot of trouble when it came to clothing(particularly the metal kind).
Personality
You will never meet a more useful person then Joe, as he's the go to guy for anything you want done. This not being because he's a jack of all trades...but because there's hardly a task out there that Joe wont do if asked for help. This, needless to say, ends in him being a throw rug for a great many people. His kindness is constantly being abused, but he doesn't mind in the least.
The biggest thing about this young man is that he doesn't talk much at all. In fact, those not closest to him usually think him a mute. Joe never found the need to talk much, preferring to listen as he felt he learned more that way. It also prevented him from saying anything inappropriate or stupid, mistakes he much rather other's make. His silence also trained him to be observant, so much so that his analytical skills are quite the feat to witness.
There's also a great deal of kindness to Joe, his reliability being proof of this. He could never stand to see someone cry in front of him without some effort to cheer them up, or see someone picked on without going to their aid. This makes him a great friend, especially since he's already prone to being a great listener.
History
Joe was born in the shadow of Nagoya castle, his family being retainers of the shogun residing there. Here he grew up and plaid, eventually meeting and becoming friends with none other than one of the greatest men in Japan's history: Oda Nobunaga.
The two were wonderful friends, inseparable from the moment they met. The two grew into fine men, and fine samurai, Joe becoming one of Nobunaga's advisors during his campaigns. Nobunaga trusted his friends advice, and during the Battle of Okehazama (June,1560) was right there with Nobunaga leading the victorious charge into Yoshimoto's camp.
Nobunaga's famous speech still burning in his ears, Joe charged in and felled many of the enemy troops before a stray arrow caught him in his stomach. It was here he died, for when he was knocked off his horse he fell upon a fallen foes katana. He lived long enough for his commander-and-friend to come to his side, and his final act of friendship was preventing him from dying in dishonor from the shameful strike to his back.
Nobunaga pulled Joe's tanto from its saya, and gave a speechless farewell before wrapping Joe's hand around his own dagger and helping him commit Seppuku.
Joe spent a great many years of his spiritual life roaming that battlefield, aimlessly looking for answers that he did not remember the questions to. Nothing but an empty shell of the brave samurai he was in life, he did not know what had happened or what would become of him. It took 300 years of purgatory before a shinigami finally found his wandering spirit and sent him to Rukongai.
It was here that he roamed another hundred years, trying to find himself. He eventually wandered upon a group of children being picked on a few of the local thugs. He observed as one of them stomp on one of the poor kids, and it was then something inside him clicked. Joe picked up the closest object to him, which happened to be a broom handle, and dispatched the three or four of them out of pure instinct and reflex.
Needless to say he had found his calling, and continued his protection of the weak until a local shinigami had gotten wind of him. This particular man suggested he join their ranks and truly make a difference. It didn't take much thought for Joe to decide, and a day later he was enrolled in the academy.
Joe's days at the academy were mostly spent (re)learning the ways of the sword, or Bushido in this particular case. The former samurai had no interest in the incantations of bakudou and hadou, he didn't talk enough in the first place and secondly had no innate talent for that kind of thing. He shined as a swordsman, his blade being one with him after only a short time at the academy. He would of graduated with honors save his distaste of kidō, and was later assigned to the thirteenth squad where he serves today.
Combat
Strengths
Joe is an intellectual fighter, never wasting a movement or allowing his opponent to catch him off guard(usually). He's also quite agile, having a grace unheard-of in most men and a speed to match it.
Weaknesses
Joe, by himself, is actually lacking greatly in the strength department. He's also quite frail, something formed from not letting blows hit him a great deal. With Joe's lacking the will to talk, future Kidō chanting can be can be seen few and sporadic.
