Appearance
At a glance, Yin looks like a female in her teenage years. She stands at a height of five feet and weighs 47 kilograms. Her head is ovoid in shape, and crowned with straight, raven-black hair, which is long enough to cascade down to her knees. Her hairline is fashioned into a widow's peak, which cuts slightly into her forehead. Her eyes are big, almond shaped and green. High cheekbones, a small nose and mouth complement the rest of her face. Her skin, olive in color, is smooth and unscarred. She has a delicate frame, but moves with the athletic grace of a skilled dancer.
Now a Shinigami captain, Yin's outfit has been adapted. Her hair is now usually tied into two ponytails, and she now bears a hair pin (actually an heir loom of the Hakkebana clan). She wears a black kimono, no hakamas. The kimono drops down to her ankles, and she wears geta sandals on her feet. Upon her clothes, she wears the haori of the Shinigami taicho, with the sleeves intact and no modifications. Although she has gotten rid of most of her jewellery (save her earrings), she still wears a dog tag hidden in her robes, that bears the name: 'Jia Yin'.
Personality
Yin is a ditsy character. She always tends towards being goofy, sanguine, optimistic, vacant and rather shy of the opposite sex. She often smiles, unless she is disturbed by something. Her giddy nature may usually give her off as a cute daft energetic youngster, but if that's what you think, then you're far from the truth.
Behind that 'silly' exterior is a very analytic mind, that is constantly thinking, although not always productively. Yin is a natural genius, with a passion for research, tinkering with objects, engineering and science. This is not a ruse to hide a more evil character or anything, (she's as innocent as she comes) as she is often found using her brains to further some silly campaign or the other. She is very meticulous, and loves order in her kitchen, room and workplace.
Yin holds life dearly, and will rarely ever kill, unless pushed to the wall. She doesn't care much for combat, but it has been shown that she enjoys running around and performing other acrobatic stunts. She doesn't care very much for rules, and will obey, as long as the rule is for the "common good". Well, "common good" is relative, isn't it?
Something else to note is that Yin has serious mood swings. Though she smiles often, she can easily lapse into a state of melancholy, where she cries often and becomes withdrawn. She rarely ever gets angry though, even when melancholic, unless she sees oppression. In or out of mood swings, Yin remains loyal to her friends, and her sister, Mei, above all.
She has an uncanny sense of smell and taste (she can taste the cleaning agent a cook used to wash a cleaning utensil while cooking the meal), and is allergic to lots of stuff (mild allergies; they cause her to sneeze). As a result, she is very choosy and careful of what enters her mouth. She is an avid drinker of tea, is well versed in the art of making it, and can differentiate its separate flavors from taste alone, no matter the number of flavors that have been mixed together.
Yin is very respectful, paying deference always to her superiors, and she is a very cultured person. People with vulgar mouths or lacking manners put her off.
History
Jia Yin was the second child and daughter born to a 'common' noble family in Rukongai, called Hakkebana. Her name, Yin, was coined from the Yin-Yang, Yin being feminine, dark and soft. And although this was her second name, she preferred it.
Although she had whatever she wanted, her parents were very strict, setting up so many rules and regulations that Yin soon grew an aversion to laws. She had to obey them, though, as disobeying brought about punishment. Yin was better off on the good side of her parents. The only person that she cold play with and really talk to was her elder sister, who appeared very understanding. They became very close, reading together, and training together with staves under a private tutor (which was the most interesting part of Yin's life).
As she grew older, she discovered that she was always hungry, whereas other people were not. She could finish huge amounts of food in a sitting, which caused her parents much alarm. She didn't really care about being the odd one out, as long as the food kept coming. Funnily enough, she noticed that her elder sister also had her hunger bouts. Okay, she was a little normal then.
And then, the time came. Her parents decided that Mei, her elder sister, was ripe for marriage. That thought alone bothered Yin. They would come for her, too, and she wasn't ready. For now, however, there was not much she could do but watch. Her sister was not one to give in without a fight, and would challenge to combat anyone who asked for her hand in marriage. For a while, Mei was victorious, until she lost to a guy in a black garb. He just seemed so powerful, so able to read Mei's movements. Yin was impressed by the man's fighting prowess, but the idea of marriage turned her stomach sour.
A short time later, something unexpected happened. The man lost his life mysteriously. That gave some breathing space to the Hakkebana daughters. Already, they had been planning escaping from the manor, but there was no way they wouldn't be caught eventually, unless...
The girls lied to their parents that they were going visiting, and that was when they made their move. Clandestine investigations had revealed to them that the black garbed man was a Shinigami, one of the elite members of Seireitei's fighting force. The day they escaped, they applied for the entrance exam.
It was a fluid stroke of luck. By the time their parents had noticed anything, Yin and Mei were within the walls of Seireitei, as Shinigami wannabes. There was no way anyone could get them out now. In the Academy, Yin discovered that the life of a Shinigami is centered around rules. She preferred being a Shinigami, though, because at least, she could live as she wanted.
Thus, the era of Hakkebana Yin as a Shinigami would soon begin...
Combat
Strengths
First of all, Yin does not have any preference to any arm. In other words, she is ambidextrous, and can easily switch any arm between offense and defense. She is really fast on her feet, naturally, and agile. Her fighting style has quite a number of Chinese undertones, Ba Gua being the most pronounced. Thus her style is quick, circular and evasive. Her sense of balance and equilibrium is very good also, enabling her to utilize acrobatic skills during offensive combat and evasion. Finally, her greatest asset, arguably, is her mind. Yin is very observant, and can still analyze a battle well, while being actively involved in it. She is good at creating strategies and noticing weak points that are hard to notice, but nonetheless observable.
Weaknesses
First problem: physique. Yin is small and not naturally endowed with strength. As a result, she can not utilize Hakuda in any way. Her blows and kicks will only sting, at the very worst, and all she can do with her body is knock her foe off balance. Yin, although being meticulous and analytic, tends to be reckless, and many of her strategies may be a little suicidal. That can be dangerous.
Also, she suffers from a natural, but rather acute case of claustrophobia. Being enclosed in a place without exits can cause her to lose both focus and cool. Her loyalty can be a bit harmful, as she trusts all her friends a little too much and thus can be betrayed very easily.
