Appearance
Mai is a female of around twenty years. She is small, around 5 to 5'2", and has shoulder length, raven black hair. She has a small butterfly tattoo at the back of her nape. She is your typical petite female, more so when compared to Shogure.
She is quick to temper but is a very loyal friend...and a very loyal girlfriend for that matter. Very nostalgic, and often brings back memories of the academy days for that matter, much to the chagrin of Shogure. Secretly still harbours a lot of romance for Sho...though is not so sure if Sho still harbours any love for her whatsoever.
Personality
In battle she is headstrong and determined...and also a very keen strategist. She will whisper suggestions to Shogure, and is a very fitting voice compared to Kuroihonoo in contrast to Shogure's caution-to-the-wind attitude. She is not that much of a reiatsu powerhouse, but like Shogure, tends to fight even when the opponent greatly overpowers her. She is also something of a genius, being able to graduate from the Academy ahead of time as Shogure did. Never did learn kidō, as well.
History
A classmate and presumably dead former romance of Kasuke Shogure during his Shinigami Academy days. She re-appeared in Rukongai right after the incident with Shirou Kamui, and actively sought out Shogure...applying to become lieutenant of the Thirteenth division without even saying anything about her return to Shogure. Harbours a deep, dark secret she would only tell Kasuke.
Mai has a long history and most of it, is connected with Shogure. Her history before being accepted into the Academy is sketchy, since she grew up in the slums of Rukongai. But the way she fended for herself and the way she carried herself in spite of being an orphan and a vagrant, for that matter, caught the attention of quite a few officers looking for potential shinigami. This happened during her teens, when she stopped a robbery happening at a nearby ramen store.
Once she got into the Academy she was a constant high scorer, becoming the virtual rival of one exceptional male shinigami, Shogure Kasuke. Kasuke carried himself differently when in the Academy...upright, noble, and a gentleman, albeit a fierce, fierce competitor. Never mind that Mai was female, Sho marked her as his equal and rival and fiercely competed with her for top marks...which led to their early graduation, and eventual romance. Sho didn't even notice that he was falling for Mai, and pretty soon they were an inseparable couple.
However, during one routine mission centered at capturing a hollow terrorizing the Kenpachi district of Rukongai, Mai and a few students were separated from the group. Sho, who was so tied up fighting the hollow, failed to see that a garganta sucked Mai and a few students right into Hueco Mundo. Shinigami from the 7th followed and returned with some students. Mai was not among them.
Mai, however, returned surprisingly after a few years, to the surprise of quite a few former classmates who were now enlisted shinigami. She was still seeking Shogure...and when asked about her past, she rarely spoke. She only will reveal it to Shogure, as she said.
