Appearance

Hydriatus is a young man who is best described as easily forgettable. He lacks any unique or defining features, coming across as extremely ordinary, even by arrancar standards. He wears the traditional arrancar uniform, and the remains of his hollow mask are a pair of earrings shaped like fangs. He has short, messy blonde hair and brown eyes, and has his number tattooed on the back of his neck, whilst his hollow hole is located in his lower chest, an area he usually keeps covered by the arrancar jacket he wears. Hydriatus is armed with a single sabre.

Hydriatus' gigai, Hans Grunder, appears as a man in his late forties, with grey hair as well as a beard and mustache, all neatly trimmed. Often clad in business suits, Grunder is a typical tall European, around 6' tall. He has clear brown eyes, and speaks with a slight german accent.

Personality

Hydriatus is a being driven by an urge to be recognized and congratulated. As one of the youngest arrancar, he sees himself as being constantly judged as inadequate and not befitting his rank, and goes out of his way to prove himself worthy of being a Numero. Incapable of the feats of power other arrancar flaunt and conjure without difficulty, Hydriatus has developed quite an inferiority complex. In conversations he is quiet and polite, though eager to boast about his latest accomplishment. He constantly feels unwelcome everywhere he goes, making him seem distant to those who would try to talk to him. Coming from the battlefields of Europe, he knows pain and suffering, and he secretly relishes the feeling of power one gets when inflicting it upon others.

History

A pair of identical twins, Hydriatus is actually a single soul split between two bodies. Born in Poland under the names of Paul and Luke, the duo grew up working hard and studying to become engineers, hoping to aid rebuild their homeland into the pride of Europe. Unfortunately, the Second World War broke out before they could make their dream a reality, and the pair were killed when Warsaw fell to the Nazi's in 1939. Their spirits were swiftly transformed into Hollows after being exposed to the atrocities committed by the Soviets and the Nazis throughout their homeland.

Yet their brilliance shone through even in this bestial state, and they were capable of recognizing the changes happening in the world as technology advanced beyond what they had considered possible whilst alive. However, as only halves of a single soul, they lacked the strength to fight their impulses, and greedily devoured the souls of those unfortunates who were killed in the fighting and the camps. The vast amount of death throughout the land at the time resulted in a steady supply of souls, and the two hollows quickly grew in power, though they could never hope to match a being with a complete soul of their own. Shinigami would often patrol the remains of Poland throughout the war, having to make regular visits to the concentration camps and sites of partisan activity. Each time one of these reapers would descend, Hydriatus, as the pair began to see themselves, would slip away to another camp, and resume his feast. Between 1940 and 1945, it is believed the Hollow Hydriatus devoured over half of the souls generated by the death camps of Treblinka and Auschwitz.

Intelligence soon returned to the being, and they realized that their weakness had to be hidden. And so one of the twins would walk as Hydriatus, and the other would hide. Due to their shared soul, both knew and experienced exactly the same things anyway, meaning that Hydriatus was capable of not only being in two places at once, but also running complex schemes and hunts that resulted in him being able to eventually tackle low level shinigami and hollows. But as the war drew to a close, Hydriatus knew that it was time to find a new hiding place, somewhere where he could feed and continue to grow strong, to prove and justify his existence. And somehow it came to pass that he wound up in the desert of Hueco Mundo. The first thing he did upon arrival was carve himself a lair beneath the sands, a private retreat where half his soul could rest when wounded or hide from potential predators.

It would be another sixty years before Hydriatus' soul finally became that of an arrancar. He journeyed out from his lair then, and was accepted into Las Noches, where he became a low ranked Numero of no great distinction. Realizing his soul power would never garner him the recognition he craved, Hydriatus returned to earth, choosing to utilize technology and his innate talent at stealth and subterfuge to achieve the position of fame and power he had always dreamed of. That was where he managed to obtain an experimental gigai from a careless unseated of the Twelfth Division. The fight was quick for the shinigami, taking all of three minutes. For Hydriatus it had been a month, since he had first spied the shinigami interacting with the living, and scheming ever since then a way to obtain it for himself. The gigai is capable of not only holding his form and allowing him to interact with the world of the living, but also masking his weak arrancar reiatsu signature completely, allowing him to walk amongst humans completely invisible to shinigami and hollows. He was swift to utilize this gift, and soon setup a small organization of smugglers, who he used to track down information and technology he would then transmit to his other half back in Las Noches to transport to the lair they had made in Hueco Mundo.

Since then, Hydriatus has decided to show the world of the living and the dead exactly what he is capable of, and that despite his numerous disadvantages he is still a Numero, and a worthy addition to their ranks.

To achieve the praise of the Emperor, and the respect of the Espada, he resolved to craft a great military fortress, where the armies of the arrancar could be trained in a new method of warfare, making use of the great numbers of Hollows and arrancar in Hueco Mundo.

The forces he would create in the name of the Empire would be broken down into Legiones, each commanded by a Conquistador, a mighty general appointed by Hydriatus to oversee the well-being of each Legion. These arrancar would act as dark parodies of the Gotei 13 captains, and command overall authority over each of their Legiones. The first Conquistadors were:

Nexus Tempest, Hollow, Conquistador I
Kovou Mizura, Arrancar, Conquistador II
Yukiko Shimizu, Shinigami, Conquistador III

The first three Conquistadors were the first to learn of Hydriatus' vision, and swore to be his allies in the battles to come. It was a cold winter night in the rapidly emptying Okumichi marketplace, and the group swiftly went their separate ways to prepare themselves for the trials ahead, resolving to meet again at the site of Hydriatus' future fortress, Ocasa.

With the foundations of a new military planned out, Hydriatus began the long and arduous process of raising a workforce to craft the great fortress, which would house not only the Legiones but his own retreat as well. He knew it would have to be a symbol for a new era of the arrancar empire, a grand gesture to show not only the strength of a united arrancar nation, but also his own brilliance and power in creating a military staging point for the Empire to utilize in the future. That is why he contacted his various lackeys in the mortal world to aid him in the salvaging of long forgotten technology and weaponry. These pieces of salvage would be used to make Ocasa into a fearsome fortress, one an army could never hope to take.

That is why he had the heavy caliber guns of the Bismarck and the Yamato raised from the sea beds where they rested, and transported to the construction yards of Ocasa. There they were modified by Hydriatus himself to feed off the high spiritual energy prevalent in Hueco Mundo to generate Cero beams, aimed and released by attending arrancar.

Whilst Hydriatus was hardly as accomplished an engineer as Peligroso, or a scientist as Vivienne, his ingenuity was of a completely different kind. Whereas Peligroso and Vivienne approached their problems with a direct and efficient manner, crafting items and Hollows with a critical eye as to their purpose, Hydriatus sought to emulate the armies of the mortal world. Having been on the receiving end of the German blitzkrieg in World War 2, he knew that single specialized units, whilst effective, would require a level of coordination far beyond the abilities of the arrancar to enforce.

That is why he focused on enforcing discipline and efficiency in his troops, making warriors capable of acting in concert and reliably so. His own Legion, Cero, was the first to be created, followed swiftly by Legiones Primera, and Segunda. Conquistador III went missing before her Legion could be organized, and so what forces that were to be assigned to her were given instead to the newest Conquistador, Sliver Hunter. Conquistador III had in fact turned her back on her oath, and joined the Numero forces of Lord Ortiga, the Primera Espada and Emperor of Las Noches.

Once his grand gift to the Empire was complete, Hydriatus travelled to Las Noches and offered Ocasa an his armies to the Emperor in return for the privilege of being the first to breach the walls of Seireitei. The Primera Espada accepted his offer, though Hydriatus lost Ocasa, the fortress being granted to the Emperor's Menos commander, Dorze.

Meanwhile, Yukiko Shimizu had been dispatched by Ortiga to halt the steady numbers of Arrancar workers leaving Las Noches for Ocasa. She went about this with reckless and bloody abandon, until Hydriatus appeared to deal with her. The fight was short and brutal, with Conquistador III being driven off, though Zamael Hydriatus paid for his victory by the loss of his left arm.

Combat

Strengths

Indistinct: Due to his unassuming and stealthy nature, Hydriatus is impossible to pick out of a crowd, and people forget his face even as they talk to him.

Tech use: Due to his passion for machinery whilst he was alive, Hydriatus is one of the few true arrancar engineers, joyfully using technology scavenged from the world of the living and altered to work in the world of the dead.

Experimental Gigai: A rare and exceptional find, this gigai allows Hydriatus to walk amongst mortals and interact with them without his arrancar nature from being detected.

Weaknesses

Inferiority Complex: Due to having only half a soul, and often being mocked for his weak combat ability, Hydriatus has developed a tendency to overestimate his enemies and underestimate himself, fleeing from fights he could actually win, and quickly conceding defeat.

Proof of Excellence : Driven by a desire to prove himself, Hydriatus will often craft elaborate and complex plans and schemes requiring lots of time and effort to achieve his goal, even in situations where a simple and brutal approach would be best.
