Appearance

5 feet and 5 inches tall, at a mere 70 pounds, Hoshiko isn't even slightly intimidating. She has a surprisingly athletic build, despite abhorring physical strain, because she's just about skin and bones. Whatever weight isn't shifted to her less-than-developed waist, hips and chest is lean muscle. She has fair skin, but not pale; bronze, or as others would call it, 'reddish brown' hair. Her eyes are auburn, like deep hazelnut in colour. Long, curly, and always fashioned into a less-than-stylish ponytail, her hair never interferes with her reading.

Hoshiko wears the standard shinigami uniform with no variations. She lacks in accessories, save for a pair of large, circular glasses which she is basically blind, close-range, without.

Personality

Hoshiko is made of a combination of smarts, irrational emotions, and contradictions. A strong-minded girl, she will bounce back from mostly anything, save for a few key subjects. She was top of her class in school, and top of her class in the Shinou Academy, and is quite proud of these facts, though she would never go as far as to brag about either on purpose. She can usually be found alone, or in a library of some sort, reading up on a favored book or hers, or furthering her education. She's capable of many things, including physical activities, but usually won't go near anything that seems even slightly demanding of her body.

Hoshiko harbors an innate fear of getting close to men. Speaking with them, from a distance, is acceptable. However, when made to come into contact, or close range with them, she will almost always spas out somehow. She appears to have, somehow, linked men in general to her untimely demise; Viewing them as something akin to a speeding bullet or blade heading directly at her. Ironically, she still finds both men and women attractive on a sexual scale. Thus, such relationships are either destined to fail, or extremely hard to maintain.

Because she is so afraid of 'letting others in', so to speak, Hoshiko is afraid to show others obvious signs of affection. She can come off as slightly tomboy-ish because of which. She means well, always has, but emotions are no longer her strong point.

History

As a child, Hoshiko never met her actual parents. Her biological mother wasn't ready for a daughter, and after having had her, placed her in an orphanage of humble origin. She spent the first few years of her life as an orphan, amidst peers mostly older than her, and therefore lacking friends her age. At the still-early age of 4 years old, however, Hoshiko was adopted by a couple who had been unable to produce children, and within 2 weeks of negotiation, she was taken from the orphanage and into a new lifestyle.

Hoshiko's parents were both women; A lesbian marriage, therefore they were obviously unable to have a child of their own. The two women took to Hoshiko very easily; they showered her with love and affection and did everything in their power to ensure she grew up like a normal girl would. And, despite the lack of a 'father figure', Hoshiko did grow up normally. There was the obvious teasing that came from having two mothers, but Hoshiko was strong-minded and never let such things bother her.

At the age of 12, Hoshiko began to blossom as a young woman, and started going through the troubling stages of puberty. This was a particularly trying time for her parents, who had reinforced the belief in her that there was nothing wrong with either homosexuality or heterosexuality, because it meant that Hoshiko would go on to flirt or be flirted with by both boys and girls during her late middle school and early high school years. This carried on for a while, but for the most part, Hoshiko proved to be more tame in her 'rebellious' years than most girls.

Hoshiko would date a girl in her later highschool years named Shizuka Kiyomizu, a senior whilst Hoshiko was but a sophomore. They spent much time together outside of, and in school. Shizuka, two years older than Hoshiko, had come from the same orphanage as she did. Thus, they hit it off quite well, being so-called 'childhood friends' by their own definition. They were both bookworms; Hoshiko looked to her older peer as both a mentor and a source of comfort. Their relationship would only last until the end of Shizuka's senior year, however, when she decided upon taking a boy to prom with her rather than Hoshiko. It seemed that she had never taken their relationship as serious as her younger peer, and therefore had no intention of actually going any distances with her. The event left Hoshiko with a deep-seeded hatred and discomfort towards boys, to the point that she usually freaked out when near them.

Hoshiko's junior and senior years were spent alone, as her parents both worked daytime careers, and Hoshiko was reluctant to let anymore friends into her life. She worked hard, so much so that she usually stayed out of the loop in terms of the latest trends on the market. Her parents were the compensating factor, but they could only do so much to keep their daughter from being 'outdated' by her classmates. Hoshiko didn't seem to care much, and would usually bury herself in books and work until she collapsed. It was obvious that, until late in her senior year, she had yet to get over Shizuka's 'betrayal'.

Nearing her own graduation, Hoshiko was approached by Shizuka again, who took the time to apologize for how their relationship ended. It was late to say the least, but eventually, before graduation, the two buried the hatchet, and became friends once more. As a kind gesture, Shizuka even offered to be Hoshiko's 'date' to her prom, seeing as she'd yet to ask anyone. Hoshiko didn't refuse. Her highschool days ended on a good note, her grades high, her best friend by her side again, and her heart healed, somewhat.

It came time for Hoshiko to prepare to leave for college, and Shizuka, who was two years ahead of her, had already left for Tokyo Metropolis to enter a college of her own. Once she was ready, Hoshiko was also to take off for Tokyo, where she would attend classes at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. However, things went south rather quickly with that plan. Hoshiko, a mere 19 years old, was on her way home one evening from her job at a nearby library when she was made victim of a purse-cutting attempt. The thief made his way down a series of back streets, and Hoshiko unwittingly followed, whilst calling for the police. He led her into a dead end, which at first seemed odd, until he would turn and lash out at the girl, attacking her viciously.

This was no simple attempt at robbery; This man who now looked to seriously injure Hoshiko was none other than the same boy who stole her Shizuka away from her. On the inverse, however, here this man had finally tracked down and trapped the little lesbian girl who stole his girlfriend, Shizuka, away from him. And so he did prey upon her, assaulting her and even attempting to rape her. Hoshiko, however, fought as hard as she could, and through chance of accident, the male slammed her against a wall with enough force to fatally injure her. In a near instant, though the struggle, her life ended, and as such, her soul was forced from her body. But the boy was unable to tell this, apparently believing he'd only knocked her unconscious, and molested the girl he thought still alive.

Hoshiko was powerless to stop this. As a spirit, despite how much she fought, kicked and screamed for the boy to stop what he was doing, but he either would not listen, or could not hear or notice her. It had still yet to dawn on the girl that she was, in fact, dead; It wouldn't for a while, until the boy, who finally noticed blood which leaked from her head, suddenly froze up and fled the scene. At that point, she was left alone, with her body, which had bled out so much that even she couldn't pretend it wasn't real. The surreal scene caused her to black out for a time, but she would wake up later, in the same place. It wasn't a dream, despite how badly she continued to convince herself it was.

Eventually, another man who seemed drunk stumbled upon her in the dead end alley, and Hoshiko watched as he tumbled back around and ran for help... but not before taking opportunities' chance at rummaging through her purse for what little money she had on her person. It was an unbelievable, despicable act. What would drive a man to steal from a dead woman? She wanted to scream, throw something, hurt the man in any way she could, but she couldn't. She was powerless, and once this fact finally sunk into her mind, she eventually slunk down into a corner and blocked everything else out, seemingly in shock. By the time detectives had arrived on the scene, Hoshiko no longer even had the wherewithal to care what happened to her.

It took a little over two week's time, but eventually the boy was brought in for questioning, and subsequently arrested under charges of murder and rape. They even caught the bum who stole from the crime scene. A happy ending for Hoshiko's parents, who were relieved to see justice served to those were in the wrong. Hoshiko herself, however, was still stuck in that scene, the events of her death playing over and over in her mind. She couldn't think of anything else.

Hoshiko's life, or afterlife, from that point was a bit of a blur. Once the investigation was closed, her parents had her buried in a cemetery not far from the orphanage where she spent the first few years of her life. Thus, Hoshiko spent the rest of her days in that cemetary, bound to her body by a chain. She didn't care much, and as time passed, she had almost forgotten why she was even there, or who she even was. It was not until what she assumed to be an angel descended upon the world that Hoshiko was liberated from her life, or lack thereof, and taken to a new world. A world which she would come to know as Soul Society.

Life in the Soul Society was no easier than her life had been thus far. In fact, it was slightly harder. Without her parents to look over her, Hoshiko had to fend for herself. She was sent to live in Junrinan, the first district of West Rukongai. It was a peaceful life, despite being a life she managed by herself. For a time, Hoshiko did nothing; She hid away, purposefully, in a corner of the district, away from most society. She wanted to be left alone, for obvious reasons; She'd still not mentally recovered from her ordeal. She was approached several times, eventually; Once by a male, which resulted in her literally doing everything in her power to keep him out of her sight, going as far as to attempt hiding in a small crate.

Rumors of her 'hiding' became slightly common; A small murmur amongst the district. After a while, people simply stopped coming by. No point in bothering someone who obviously wanted to be left alone. There was a single woman, however, who did continue to come by every day, even when the rumors died down. Her name was Ai Mihara, and over a long period of time, she would eventually become a guardian figure towards Hoshiko. It was she that eventually convinced Hoshiko to leave the crate she'd been hiding in, and live with her.

She worked for a small bookstore near the gates to Seireitei, and therefore when Hoshiko became dependent on her, she worked under her. And for a time, life was decidedly normal. At the bookstore, Hoshiko would hide away in the back, labeling and re-labeling books, as well as sorting them. A win-win situation for Ai, who could use the extra help, and Hoshiko, who enjoyed reading, and the quiet solitude. It was not often that she would see anyone, but the bookstore became a bit more popular in the years to come, and several shinigami would peruse her wares. Perhaps it was due to this close relationship, but whatever the case, Hoshiko unkowingly began to show signs of spiritual energy not unlike shinigami. Fatigue, hunger, stress when among the stronger of their forces-- So much so, that one day, as a high-ranking officer passed through Ai's bookstore, Hoshiko fainted in the backroom. This, along with a few meetings, eventually led to her joining the shinigami academy.

Once more in 'school', Hoshiko reverted quickly to her less-than-sociable self; Falling into her old habits. Shying away from men, burying herself in books. Partially, this was due to her still-vivid memory of the events that lead to her death; Within the sanctity of the bookstore she'd worked for before, there wasn't much need for social interaction; She stocked shelves and worked in the back, away from the rest of the world. However, she was forced to live among peers at this point, a fact that caused her great discomfort. She shared her living quarters with another girl, a female older than herself; But even that was too much, and she'd often stay away from the grounds as long as she could without breaking any rules. She reminded her of Shizuka just a little too much for her comfort.

The first year or two was nothing more than this; Studies were simple and life eventually became routine enough for Hoshiko to allow herself to relax a little. It was when she was made to pick up a sword that Hoshiko showed her... 'weaknesses'. While she shied away from men normally, when faced against a boy, she showed such disdain for the martial arts that she'd go as far as to run, literally run, from battle. The first instance of this nearly resulted in her accidentally injuring another student who'd merely gotten in the way; Her actions and behaviour had to be questioned for a time, as she continued this reaction in nearly every spar. She was eventually approached by a female instructor, who, after two sessions, got Hoshiko to open up and tell her of her past, a subject which greatly troubled the teacher. Despite this, she convinced Hoshiko to continue her training in the academy, and took particular care to avoid having her go through unnecessary trails where possible and slowly helped her slightly come to terms with her 'fear'.

Outside of Hakuda and Zanjutsu (against men), she excelled. Quite athletic, smart, and quick on her toes. When she did graduate from the academy, she caused a mild scene when one of her classmates, an older male who admired her work and skill, patted her on the back. Supposedly, the shock of this caused her to instantaneously faint.
