Appearance
Standing at a decent 5'11", Genn Otohana holds a jovial appearance about him. Genn has a tiny waist- only wearing a 32-33 when he was living. That being said, Genn is all legs- a good 60 percent of his height is owned by his waist and legs. Underneath his kosode, Genn's chest and abdominal muscles are cut and well defined. His arms aren't huge, but have a good layer of visible muscle- most of his muscle mass is in his legs and abs. His arms are long, as are his hands and fingers, each one capable of a force as soft as a gossamer wind to as deadly as a blade itself. With broad shoulders and a nicely shaped neck, Genn holds his head high- no slouching for him. His hair is medium-short, jet black, and completely aggravating. His hair is so thick that sleeping incorrectly leaves him with an almost permanent cowlick. It has a neon blue stripe by his right eye. Genn was born with a little-understood genetic defect called Heterochromia, but it is only the partial form. His eyes are green and blue at the same time. His skin is a pale caramel color.
Personality
Although ADD was not noticed at the time Genn was born, nowadays he would definitely be diagnosed today. From a young age, Genn always had trouble paying attention to his lessons or things he just didn't really like; yet when the subject interested Genn, he would immerse himself in it until he knew all about it. Genn was quite an intelligent child, teen, and man. Schooling was quite easy for him, even if he didn't completely listen. Genn was a genius at finding shortcuts to things like test questions or homework so as to properly utilize his time. Speed was always the main characteristic of his mind. Always kind of calm under pressure, Genn was very level headed and methodical when it came to sticky situations. When Genn had a task at hand, you could never have been able to tell he had problems with attention, as he was so completely focused that he could block out voices of others of need be. After Genn died, he came to see this as an almost split personality; it was very much him in every way, but almost a total opposite of the normal Genn. He can spend days in this altered state of thinking- a darker sense about him, his thoughts and movements rapid and calculated.
Normally, Genn is playful in nature; aloof, social, and fun loving all can describe him. Most all the people he met in the Rukongai can elaborate much in this fashion- and even most of the people he met in the academy. Genn is always easily liked by people because of his infectious personality, especially by people older than him- it has always been like this since his years in highschool. Few people saw the stoic, cold, and calculating side of Genn- only the opponents he faced in the academy's training sessions.
Genn, an avid reader since a young child, reads multiple books at a time, can always pull one (or more) out when he's moderately to extremely bored. Recently (in the last ten years), he has come to love all forms of manga, and will travel to the department stores in Ginza just to stock up on his multiple series and volumes. He uses reading as an escape from the minor stresses or anxieties Genn has.
History
Genn Otohana grew up in a Ginza that was not as industrialized as we know it today. Life was not easy for someone around their twenties, and at 18, Genn had to settle for running his family's tea shop, as they did not think he needed an education past highschool. To pay for his own tutorship with the merchants around town, Genn took a second job offered to him by a recurring customer. For a year, Genn would find information on people- tailing them, under cover work, just basic detective work he assumed- by a man named Kein. Eventually Genn was asked to make a tea with a flower called an Oleander. Kein supplied the flower, so Genn had no reason to not- after all, it was part of the business. Genn had the tea ready the next day, an was offered a glass of it. As he began to feel sick, Kein started to apologize for something- but Genn really couldn't hear, his auditory nerves weren't functioning anymore. The last thing he saw was a match.
Genn was 20 years old when he died. The fire didn't kill him; the poison from the Oleander bloom tea did. In essence Genn had 'brewed' his own death. Luckily he didn't have anything to really bind him to Earth, and made it to Rukongai Section 2 quite easily. Although, after some time, it was hard for him to survive on a day to day basis. Apparently he had an immense amount of reishi, and being in the spirit world unblocked it all. His inability to control it was noted by a friendly Shinigami who frequented his neighborhood- I mean, who could miss the guy laying on the side of the road. He was referred by the man to the Soul Academy- a setting in which Genn could thrive. Thrive Genn did. A lot of things came natural to him- especially close combat. Hakudo wasn't his thing, but Genn's other nature played out in his practice matches with his fellow classmate, outdoing them with a sword and his bare hands- allowing both sides of him to finally grow in equal. Nearing graduation, he was approached by a few of the different divisions who had noticed his different skills- but the only one he was interested in was the one that seemed to show no interest. Division 2 was his dream- stealthy, secretive, and immensely strong.
One night, while training vigorously for a combat final, gen became so focused that his reishi became physical, and put up some kind of electrical barrier around his skin. Eventually, someone drugged him and knocked him out. He woke up in a sealed hospital room, in a hazy state, with all his study materials. So his normal side took use of the time, studying for the next few weeks. After he was released, Genn was ready to take his tests, and with the extra preparation time utilized correctly, he aced them. So Genn graduated- still with a few offers from the original divisions, but not an offer from division two. Genn stayed undecided for a few weeks, as he still had time to decide. Instead of wallowing, Genn decided to train some more in his open weeks, instead of slacking off. Careful not to let his other side break, Genn did stealth and speed training among the trees- increasing his speed greatly and allowing him to learn how to successfully hide his spiritual pressure. As he got back, a Hell Butterfly brought him a message- from Division 2! It was an invitation to join, what Genn had been waiting for had finally happened. He quickly accepted the offer, and joined Division 2.
Combat
Strengths
Altered State: As Genn becomes focused, he unlocks his inner state, a much more cunning and calculating side- aiding him in quick thinking.
Fox Feet: Naturally speedy, Genn honed his speed in the forest after his graduation from the academy.
Super Stealth: As a human, Genn learned to tail people and gain information on them. His senses of stealth are greatly improved as a Shinigami.
Weaknesses
Migraine Menace: Because Genn practically has perfect recall, a lot of information enters his head at a time- causing a stimulation overload. Genn is prone to very sharp migraines now and then.
Nap Fiend: As a constant struggle with his reishi and inner self bog him down, Genn can become lazy and begin to nap in the most random places.
Zero Span: It's quite hard for Genn to stay attentive to anything boring- so paperwork blows for him. He's always putting things like that in his desk and forgetting about it.
