Appearance
Darryl is a tall man, at six foot one. He has short, messy, red-streaked black hair, and violet eyes. When he's not on duty (and in his shinigami garb), he prefers to go around in plain coloured robes (brown being the most common). He has a lean, but muscular physique, honed by several years of training in the Shinigami Academy.
He is not without scars, however, either physical, mental, nor emotional. An accident in his training resulted in a scar on his front, going from his chest all the way to his stomach, in the vague shape of a very jagged capital 'y'. He has another scar on his right arm, going from the shoulder down to the elbow, shaped almost like a leafless tree with the branches reaching out. He has no idea how he got the scar.
His violet eyes often betray his emotions. When angered, his eyes seem to flare up, when saddened, they darken. When happy, they light up. Reading his eyes is the easiest way to read his mood.
Personality
In a word: lazy. Darryl would sooner lie down and stare at the sky and think all day than do any real work, though beneath that is a fierce will and determination to protect people from harm – not that he'd ever admit to it. A somewhat peaceful man by nature, Darryl never goes looking for fights and would rather reach a peaceful agreement, though he's not naïve enough to believe that's always possible.
His pacifistic nature is the reason why he chose to specialize in Kidō, so that he wouldn't have to rely on his Zanpakutō, a weapon whose very existence is to cause death. Kidō, however, can be used to simply bind an enemy without necessarily killing them.
Despite this, however, he knows that to protect people, he will have to fight Hollows and kill them, or be killed. Though lazy, when he's properly motivated to do something, he gets it done quickly and efficiently...if only to get back to lazing around afterwards.
History
Born in America in 1904 to a middle class family, Darryl was an unhappy child in a very unhappy home. His mother was a drunk, his father rarely home because of his job, and Darryl found out from a young age that life generally wasn't fair. He learned to take care of himself at a young age, cooking and cleaning while his mother was passed out on the couch half the time.
At sixteen, he met a soldier at his own job as a clerk in a general store, and his interest in the military was piqued. The soldier made it sound like a freedom of sorts, but he knew that he couldn't abandon his mother. She was still drunk half of the time, and just plain angry and abusive the other half. He would have loved to have left her, but his father still wasn't around, and his mother would likely die without Darryl to cook for her.
A year later, his mother committed suicide, overdosing on painkillers and alcohol. With his father still absent from his life (and distant when he did show up), Darryl tried to resume his daily life. He met a girl and dated her for a while, but broke off the relationship when he caught her cheating on him.
On his eighteenth birthday, Darryl left his home, not caring if his father returned or not. His mother was dead, he had no ties to his home anymore, and he had wanted to join the military for two years anyway, to get away from it all and be somebody.
It had been four years since the end of the Great War, things were starting to look bad for America, and he wanted to do something for his country. At 18, he enlisted. For 17 years, he served in the military, without any major battles.
When World War II broke out, he and the other soldiers were all on constant alert, in case they were attacked. He was transferred to Pearl Harbor...
In 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Darryl, then 37 years old, was asleep at the time and was killed. It didn't take long for the Shinigami to arrive. Many of them, for this was a large scale battle. Darryl was sent to Soul Society.
It took him several years, but he discovered that he had spiritual power, and joined the Shinigami Academy. After studying there and graduating, he joined the Fifth Division, where he remains today, albeit in an unseated position.
Combat
Strengths
Despite being quite possibly the laziest shinigami in existence, Darryl, once he's truly fired up in a fight, absolutely refuses to back down and gives his all. The same is true for other aspects of his life - once he's committed to something, he won't quit very easily.
Weaknesses
Being extremely lazy means that Darryl isn't all that eager to give his all in a fight right off the bat. It takes him a while to get fired up and give his all in a fight, and often, this costs him or his allies. He also dislikes using a sword, and hasn't really trained with his Zanpakutō that much, leaving him with average sword skills at best.
