Bunjinbonsai (Reader's Potted Plant) is Keikoku Yomijou's Zanpakutō.
A katana, but with a brownish sheen to the blade. The handle and guard are highly lacquered, but not slippery.

Spirit Description

A bespectacled old man with long, flowing white hair and a calligraphy brush stuck behind one ear. He usually wears a flowing brown silk cape, and under it a nondescript blue kimono with gold embroidery. His expression seldom changes, but he is often reciting longs strings of poetry that indicate his mood and contain whatever messages he wants to communicate; when not talking, he appears to be slightly blurred and absentminded.

He likes origami, and so Yomijou's inner world is a simple garden, with a small pond full of koi and enormous tree dotting the inner compound. The main distinguishing mark of this world is that it is populated, apart from Yomijou and Bunjinbonsai, entirely by folded paper animals. Even the flowers on the trees are paper.

Shikai

Release Command: Inamu izen kou! Bunjinbonsai!(Refuse to remain barren! Reader's Potted Plant!)

It remains in appearance the same, but gains a gold vine-like carving that runs along the middle of the blade, from the guard to the tip.

The guard is shaped like an azalea.

Shikai Abilities

Ukihanaen (Floating Gardens)

At the command "Kazaru (Adorn!)", a large mass of pastel-coloured reiatsu bursts out from the tip of the blade, turning into a large number of azaleas as it leaves the blade, enough to envelop a human-sized target. The azaleas drift around in random directions, but never change their original altitude, and explode if in contact with other objects or on command from Yomijou, whichever comes first.

The ability can be reused as many times as desired; the total number of azaleas that can be in existence at any one time is equal to half his point total (i.e. if he has 300 Reiatsu, 200 Weapons, 50 Melee, and 500 Movement, he may have 525 flowers out). The explosion strength of each flower depends on the amount of reiatsu input: the more reiatsu Yomijou spends, the stronger the explosion.

Yomijou has gained greater control over this ability, allowing him to refine it into several sub-techniques by altering the properties of the flowers released. They are still summoned using the same command, but he calls them different names. He can mix these into the regular flowers or with each other as he wills, although the total number of flowers that he can summon remains unchanged.

  • Ukikemuri (Floating Smoke)

The flowers are dull gray instead of the usual bright colours. When triggered, they give off no sound or force; rather, like a deflated balloon, they emit a dull hissing sound and give off huge clouds of very opaque gray smoke, completely disproportionate to the flowers' actual size.

  • Kouhana (Roar Flower)

The flowers have no center, and are merely one large mass of separated petals drifting about. When triggered, they explode with no force or smoke; rather, they emit deafening explosive noises, similar to a backfiring car but much, much louder.

  • Goukaen (Conflagration Garden)

The flowers are mere buds, tightly-closed up little balls when released. When triggered, they explode with no smoke or sound; rather, the explosive force they release is up to three times the force from a normal flower.

Iburyou (Soothing Drink)

At the command "Katou (Sweeten!)", the blade shimmers for 5 seconds. During this time, it leaves a glowing trail from the tip as it moves (if it is held still, it simply forms a ball). At the end of 5 seconds, the trail rushes (keeping its shape) at the direction in which the tip is pointed. The entire trail turns into a thick yellow liquid upon contact with the target or if attacked, upon which it obeys the laws of physics. The liquid is highly adhesive, and can be absorbed through the skin to induce a pseudo-drunken state of mind in the target. The extent of this effect is dependent on the difference in strength between Yomijou and the target.

Bankai

Kunshi nai Yuurinhana

Kunshi nai Yuurinhana (Deep Forest Flower in a Wise Man)

Upon calling Bankai, the guard of the katana expands slightly to form an azalea-shaped covering that completely covers the sword hand. A large brown disc appears behind Yomijou's back, and five petals sprout from its sides to enfold him: one petal covers each shoulder like a shoulder guard, and one petal curls around each side of his waist. The four petals meet in the center of his chest where they form a square knot. The fifth petal curves slightly over his left shoulder and remains straight, forming a sort of cover for the back of his left arm. Out of the center of the disc sprouts a long, thorned vine that attaches to the handle of the katana.

The disc and the petals consist of two layers: the outer layer is hard, like bone or concrete, and the inner layer is spongy. The vine is as tough as any regular vine would be, but the thorns on it are strong enough to tear through skin.

Bankai Abilities

Heion no Shiranami (Tranquil White Waves)

(passive) The petals constantly exude large quantities a pale white gas, resembling steam, that hangs in the air. If Yomijou remains in one spot for more than a few seconds, this gas accumulates and appears to have covered the area in mist, hence its name. It moves sluggishly in response to wind.

The gas creates a strong soporific effect upon those who breathe it in; the effect is stronger upon those weaker than Yomijou, and vice-versa. The gas also, if it contacts blood, saliva, or sweat, immediately congeals into a wood-brown, extremely adhesive jelly-like compound that is roughly five times the weight of an equivalent mass of concrete; it can seriously impede, or even stop completely, Yomijou's opponents. Yomijou himself is completely immune to either of these effects.

Kamehametsu (Vase Destruction)

By using the command "Sasu (Pin down)!", a small projectile is launched at slightly sub-shunpo speed from Yomijou's left palm. The projectile shatters upon contact, revealing it to contain small pods that burst into growth upon contact with air, and immediately proceed to cover whatever they hit with thick, heavy vines and leaves until it is completely covered. If sliced through, the vines and leaves exude Heion no Shiranami.

Strengths

Yomijou becomes nearly undefeatable in long fights, as his Bankai abilities are devised to immobilise his opponents. He also becomes extremely dangerous at melee distance, as his opponents come under the effect of Heion no Shiranami. Anybody beyond the immediate reach of his sword may be caught by Kamehametsu, and the petal-like structures help give him some slight defense against enemy attacks that he cannot dodge.

Weaknesses

Yomijou's abilities take a little time to have a noticeable effect, during which the opponent may gain an upper hand. Also, opponents of great physical strength can struggle against the weighing and adhesive effects of Heion no Shiranami with some success. The petal-like structures afford little defense against strong blows, and as they do not regenerate, Yomijou loses their use if they are damaged. Also the shoulder-guard petals may obstruct his peripheral vision, making him easier to surprise or sneak up on. The main weakness of this Bankai, however, is that it has no defenses against long-distance attacks; if Yomijou doesn't see them coming in time to dodge and the petals cannot absorb the impacts, he can be severely injured without once striking his foe.

Senkai

Dai Hijiri Haji Kohakuiro Kaben (Great Sage Gripping the Amber Petal)

Upon calling senkai, the katana glows bright amber for a moment; then amber light suffuses a large sphere around Yomijou (around 30m radius), and then the light vanishes, leaving behind fifteen pots (3m inner diameter, 4m inner depth) that look as if they were carved of wood. The pots are engraved along the sides and rim with floral patterns. The flowerpots move with Yomijou, and by default are never more than 10m away from him.

Senkai Abilities

The pots constantly and rapidly produce a super-adhesive amber-coloured gel-like compound, sixteen times the weight of an equivalent mass of concrete; the gel will stick to anything and anyone that is not Yomijou (in fact Yomijou cannot interact with it at all, and passes through it as if it were gas; however he cannot breathe it, and so cannot remain indefinitely inside a "pot" of gel). Attacks from Yomijou pierce this compound as if it weren't there, but attacks from any other source find it almost impossible to harm (elemental and blunt attacks would need to be equal or more than 75% of Yomijou's Reiatsu to do any significant damage, and other attacks would need to be at least half of Yomijou's Reiatsu to significantly damage it; however, it is completely impervious to temperature changes, water, and wind, and is chemically completely nonreactive unless the chemicals have been infused with very strong reiatsu).

Each pot becomes completely full of gel every post cycle. Whenever each pot becomes completely full of gel, the gel passes through the bottom of the pot to hover in a vaguely pot-like shape beneath the pot; newer "pots" of gel push older "pots" of gel downward out of the way.

Any attack towards Yomijou or the actual pots triggers the "pots" of gel (not the actual pots): melee attacks result in both Yomijou, or the pot, and the attacker being engulfed in gel, while ranged attacks result in the "pots" of gel intercepting the attack (more than one "pot" may respond to an attack) and then continuing on to engulf the attacker; the "pot" of gel will continue on to the position from which the attack was launched for a maximum distance of 30 km, and does not track the attacker; anything engulfed in the "pot" en route is treated as hostile as well). Each "pot" moves with a maximum speed equivalent to the regular running speed of a character with half the Movement of Yomijou. Upon contact with a solid, the gel will splatter so as to cover as much of the encountered thing as possible. If the encountered thing is living, the gel will target any exposed orifices (nostrils, ears, etc.) before attempting to completely smother it. If it is a very large solid, as many "pots" of gel will launch themselves at it as is needed to completely engulf it.

Yomijou can turn the gel into an amber gas at will, and then return the gas to gel form (it will return to the default pot-shape). The gel remains extant even after the senkai is dismissed.

Strengths

Short-to-long-range attack: This ability allows Yomijou to defend himself against attacks from almost any distance.

Crowd control: With fifteen "pots" generated every post cycle, Yomijou is well able to deal with attacks from multiple foes.

Self-propelled: Yomijou doesn't need to know the attack is coming for the "pots" to react to it.

Immobilising: The strength of the foe is not a factor if they can't move, breathe, sweat, or talk.

Weaknesses

Limited speed: Any sufficiently fast ranged attacker will be able to keep moving and evading the "pots".

Size: Any sufficiently large attacker will consume several "pots", which then leaves fewer "pots" available for dealing with other attackers.

No remote control: Yomijou can't control the "pots"; thus he must wait to be attacked before his senkai will react to it.

No boost: While increasing his defense abilities massively, Yomijou does not gain any sort of attack capability from his senkai.

Crapshoot AI: The "pots" aren't that great at distinguishing between friend and foe; if it's in the "pot", it's engulfed and/or smothered.
