Appearance
Arlecchino isn’t particularly tall but because of his relatively thin frame he does have a very lanky look about him. Everything above the nose on his face is covered by a white half mask that is the last remnant of his old hollow mask. The overall shape of Arlecchinos face is rather oval, neither very round nor with any sharp features. His irises are a very light grey and in some cases appear completely white. His nose is slightly convex and has almost hook-like shape to it. He also has a wide mouth that is almost perpetually graced with either a large grin or a full toothed smile. Cut rather short and left unstyled is Arrlecchinos dark black hair. Upon which he wears a simple black leather, and well polished, tricorn hat.
His clothes are the traditional stark white of the arrancar, just a simple combo of hakama and a shirt with a slightly less simple coat worn on top. The shirt is a plain white tunic with a neck that dips slightly down and sleeves that end just past the elbows. The coat is a long enough to fall down to just above his ankles and sleeves that reach all the way up to his wrists. The coat, which Arlecchino typically wears open, can be buttoned up using its for black buttons.
His sword, Comedia, is hung at his hip from a black leather bandolier which is slung across Arlecchinos chest. The bandolier is made of black leather, about as wide as Arlecchinos own hand and secured by a plain steel buckle positioned right on top of his chest.
Personality
Arlecchino is a creature of whim, although his transformation has allowed him to reign in his behaviour at least to manageable standards. Still the main driving force behind his actions is the fulfilment of his own curiosity and enjoyment. Only orders from someone he recognises as his superior or fear can really get Arlecchino to do anything other than what he wants, even then he looks for ways to avoid doing so.
Arlecchino also likes to do things with a flourish, he does not see the point in doing something and not making it look good in the process. This shows in both his movements and his words, both of which tend towards the extravagance. This coupled with his whimsical nature can lead towards some rather impressive on the spot performances both traditional and of a more bloody sort.
For an arrancar Arlecchino is surprisingly friendly, a smile almost always on his face, he does his best to get along with everybody. This isn’t because he likes everyone and is determined to be their friends, on the contrary, he simply knows how much easier it is to slip a blade into someone’s back if their willing to turn around. The scariest thing is that he is rather good at this and is actually quite charming. As it is, unless he has gone over the edge, Arlecchino tends to be rather composed and his demeanor rarely betrays his inner thoughts, allowing him to lull unsuspecting targets into a false sense of security.
History
The creature known as Bauta was originally born on the All Fool’s day of 1559 in Venice only a few days before the end of the Italian Wars. Vittore Vendramin was born to a minor lady of the noble house of Vendramin and a successful merchant father. Brought up among the nobility, a little standing as his immediate family had, he learned to live in the luxury and privileges that they enjoyed. Finding mercantilism and handling money as a little too boring he studied theatre and the arts, which were constantly growing in the serene republic.
Eventually he decided that he was done with simply studying the arts and surmised to join a troupe so that he could actually perform. So at the age of seventeen and amidst protest from his parents he joined a small but successful troupe and performed throughout Venice, even straying into the Papal States, Sardinia and even Austria. He found himself praised for his talents and his performances were eagerly attended by nobility and peasantry alike. He performed private performances for lords and ladies; he took part in performances in front of large open air crowds and performed in grand theatres. Not wasting his good fortune he spent much of his free time attending all manners of parties, carnivals and festivals. His personal favourite being the grand Carnevale di Venezia and he made his business to attend. The alcohol, the merry making, the music, the stories, the loose women. All of it was too much for a young man such as Vittore to resist and so instead he immersed himself in it.
This would prove eventually to be the end of him. During the festival of 1582 Vittore found himself once again amongst a large crowd celebrating the festival just like always. Throughout the night he drank and thoroughly enjoyed himself, particularly enjoying the attentions of an especially affectionate young French lady whose name he had never caught. Not that it mattered, that was why everyone wore masks, so you never did know exactly who you were celebrating with. But as morning broke he found himself draped over a half full fountain, alone and half dressed. Pulling himself together he attempted to find his way back to his lodgings but only managed in getting himself lost in the alleyways and the early morning fog. He didn’t even notice the figure following only short distance behind. Sometime around noon a patrolling guard found Vittores corpse floating through the canals, his belongings robbed, leaving only the Bauta mask that he wore.
Soon after his death Vittore found himself chained to the very fountain he had awoken on. However no one could see him nor could he alert them to his presence. Despite all his best efforts he could neither leave nor garner any help from passers by. Soon enough his chain had eaten away at its self and he found his body changing. Warping horribly until it took on the appearance that it bears today. The only resemblance of his past life being the Bauta mask he still wears and from which he takes his name.
After years of slowly amassing his own power in both the human world and in Hueco Mundo, Bauta began to act more openly. Before he had preferred to pick off a few souls or even a hollow or two. It had been enough to sustain him and give him power but never enough to draw notice. But his hunger had grown and he had begun to make bigger and bolder moves, even going so far as to full scale slaughters in the human world.
Whilst in the middle of a grand feast on a fallen Menos Grandes Bauta had the dubious luck of meeting Ortiga Azoul, the primera of Las Noches himself. The arrancar soon introduced him to the workings of the empire and even an elevation into the ranks of its army. Although hesitant to step directly into the ascension himself, Arrlechino knew that it was only a matter of time before Ortigas offer became to tempting and he would truly become one of the espada.
Combat
Strengths
Fluid – Although no longer graced with his cape like body, Arlecchino’s movements are still very fluid and still has the knack for flowing in and out of combat. Although he can no longer do this to the same extent as he used to he still retains his talent for evading his opponents attacks, only once where he only needed to shift his body around the attacks, he now dances around them.
Flexible – Arlecchinos body retains some of its old flexibility. Although limited by his physical makeup, to a certain extent he can still bend and twist like he used to. This allows him to strike and block in ways most would find impossible or at least awkward. But to him it is as natural as not having to breath. This also has the added bonus of allowing him to slip into places normally to small or cramped for someone of his size.
Stock, still and silent – Arlecchino still holds the ability of being able to hold motionlessly still and silent, allowing him to stay almost undetectable by sight or sound. That is so long as he has the cover of darkness or something similar.
Weaknesses
Willowy – Fluid and flexible he may be but a heavy hitter he ain’t. Arlecchino is not particularly strong or powerful, at least for an arrancar. He may be able to throw a punch as good as anyone else, if he were to be faced with someone of equal level of skill he would likely come up short. This is why he prefers the use of his blade and cero, both of which allow him to even the playing field. But while forced to fight unarmed he is at a definite disadvantage.
The Edge - Although no longer as hysterical as he used to be Arlecchino still has a certain point he does not liked to be pushed over. If angered enough, or even if just constantly frustrated, he has the chance to be pushed over the edge. At which point he flies into a blinding range that can only be stopped by either the utter evisceration of the cause of his anger or the imminent danger of dying. In some cases a strong hand can also reel him in but only at risk to its owner.
A Flourish – Although impressive and even visually pleasing to those so inclined to bloody spectacles Arlecchinos fighting style is not particularly efficient. Where others would go for a quick and simple kill he prefers to end things with a bang. An artery that will cause an especially large fountain or an artistic carving in an enemies back, these are all possibilities of his style. A quick jab to the back of the neck is not. This obvious flaw hinders Arlecchino from ending fights quickly, which can often leave time for reinforcements to arrive or for someone to catch a second wind in the middle of a battle.
